    Woman in wheelchair shoots mugger

"There's not much to it," she said in a brief interview. "Somebody tried to mug me, and I shot him."

Way to go, pure and simple!

wish she'd got a bit more than his elbow, but he'll be banged to rights, i hope.

    good on you, girl!

more here, with pic of the female hero: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/09/ny...on&oref=slogin

As muggings go, it began like many others. A 56-year-old woman was leaving her building in her wheelchair, her only company the small dog perched on her lap.

Her attacker came from behind, the police said, and there was no one else around. But this attempted robbery had an ending unlike many others. As it turns out, the would-be victim, Margaret Johnson, has a permit to carry a .357 handgun — and she carries it often.

Margaret Johnson, 56, fended off an attacker yesterday by shooting him with a handgun she is licensed to carry, the police said.

The man accused of attacking her, Mr. Johnson (no relation), was described by the authorities as a “robbery recidivist,’’ with nine previous arrests. He spent several years in prison for criminal sale of a controlled substance, and he was released in February 2003, according to Department of Correction Records.

wonder why he was released . . . dumbass - he now knows not everyone is a pushover, yes!

Fantastic, what kind of scum try to mug a poor woman in a wheelchair? Boy, this one fought back.Who'd a known she was packing a gun. Pity she did not just shoot the creep dead then a few taxpayer dollars would have been saved.

He dropped the loot and ran, but cops caught up with Deron by following his trail of blood about half a block.
"He thought it was a freebie - but it wasn't," said Lisa Lykes, 26, who said the pistol-packing woman is a well-known fixture in and around her Lenox Terrace apartment complex.
"He didn't know Margaret if he thought he would rob her."
