All was not well in the home of missing pregnant woman who disappeared last Wednesday and hasn't been seen since, according to a family acquaintance.

Manjit Panghali, 30, is four months pregnant and the mother of a three-year-old daughter.

The day before her disappearance, her brother-in-law Sukhwinder Panghali, 26, who lives in the Panghali family home in Surrey, B.C., appeared in Richmond provincial court charged with criminal harassment.

''After the charge was laid she expressed a concern - and she wanted him out of the house,'' said the associate, who did not wish to be named.

On Monday, the missing woman's husband, Mukhtiar, said there were no problems at home.

The charred body found in suburban Vancouver earlier this week is that of a pregnant woman who has been missing for a week, police in Delta, B.C. confirmed Thursday.

Manjit Panghali, 30, was last seen on Wednesday, Oct. 18, when she left home to attend a local pre-natal yoga class.

She never arrived at her destination.

A popular Grade 1 teacher at North Ridge Elementary School in Surrey, Panghali was four months pregnant with her second child when she disappeared.

"This type of crime defies comprehension and the value of human life," Delta police spokeswoman Sharlene Brooks said Thursday at a news conference.

The Delta police department will be the lead agency in the investigation of the homicide, which will be very aggressive, Brooks said.

As of today, police will enforce an information blackout on the case.

Charred remains identified as missing pregnant B.C. woman

Police said Thursday that charred remains found earlier in the week were those of missing Delta, B.C. teacher Manjit Panghali. (CP/HO) DELTA, B.C. (CP) - Charred remains found near the seaside have been identified as those of a pregnant woman who went missing from her family on her way to a prenatal yoga class. Police said Thursday the probe into the disappearance of Manjit Panghali is now a homicide investigation.

Panghali, a 30-year-old Grade 1 teacher, was reported missing earlier this week and her family held a tearful news conference begging for information about her.

"This type of crime defies comprehension and the value of human life," said Const. Sharlene Brooks of the Delta RCMP. "We acknowledge that this is the most devastating to those who loved and knew her."

At the school where Panghali taught, teachers were gathered in a room to hear the sad news after the children had left for the day. Teachers from North Ridge Elementary filed out of the school weeping after hearing that their colleague's body had been identified.

Panghali and her husband have a three-year-old daughter. Her husband, Mukhtiar Panghali, told the news conference this week that he waited 26 hours to call the police after she went missing because he wanted to ensure she wasn't with family or friends.

Friends say the pair fell madly in love while both were studying to be teachers at the University of British Columbia.

Media reports have noted that Mukhtiar's brother, Sukhvinder, also lived with the couple and their daughter, but he moved out recently.

Sukhvinder Panghali appeared in court Thursday accused of stalking a former girlfriend over three months last summer.

Brooks said police have no suspects in Panghali's death.

"This investigation is still very much in its preliminary stages and police are not making any assumptions or drawing any conclusions with respect to suspects or motive," she said.

"This will be, without a doubt, a very complex and multifaceted investigation that will require all resources available to us."

Delta police are leading the investigation, with help from Surrey RCMP.

Four months after her charred remains were found beside a roadway, a man has been arrested in the death of Manjit Panghali, it was reported Friday night.

A radio station and a TV station reported that the deceased woman's husband had been arrested.

Both media outlets spoke with Harpreet Singh, an annnouncer with Radio India, who said that sources in the Indo-Canadian community had told him that the woman's husband, Mukhtiar Panghali, had been arrested by Delta police at about 5:30 p.m.

"From our sources he was taken up by the police at 5:30 p.m. today and because police are not confirming it . . . the charges will be laid Monday," said Singh.

Delta police declined to comment Friday night but said a news release would be issued Monday.

Husband Mukhtiar Panghali has been convicted of this crime.

“The evidence provides a compelling basis for the conclusion that Mr. Panghali acquired possession of Ms. Panghali’s cellular telephone after her yoga class. Since Ms. Panghali was seen leaving the yoga class, and since abundant evidence indicates that Mr. Panghali did not know where the class was held, the only rational inference from the evidence is that Ms. Panghali returned home to Mr. Panghali, and that he acquired possession of her cellular telephone during or after the events that then followed,” Judge Holmes said in her ruling.
