An apparent family dispute turned deadly when a gunman burst into a Thanksgiving Day gathering and opened fire, killing three people, police said.

Two men were being held in the shooting, which occurred shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday at an apartment complex in north Oakland.

A gunman walked into an apartment where 11 people were having dinner and began firing, authorities said. Two women and one man were fatally shot, and another man suffered a broken back when he tried to escape by jumping out a third-story window, police said.

The gunman then fled, prompting a SWAT team to close down surrounding blocks and conduct an apartment-by-apartment sweep.

Asmero Tewolda surrendered to police several hours later, after barricading himself in the complex, police said. His brother, whose name was not released, also was taken into custody, although his alleged role in the incident was unclear.

Good lord. So much for 'love, peace, family and giving thanks' to this guy; he left the victims to have this tragedy as an anniversary every thanksgiving. What a loser; a coward and out-of-control phsycho, imo. There are just too many guns available to too many people - and too many people that are trigger-happy! Senseless, as always!

Here is an article on the nation the people came from. The cause of death for the shooter's brother was listed as "undetermined". Looks like they went vigilante on his widow and her family out of a misguided need for justice. :( What will they do, if it is proven that their brother's widow was innocent of his death?

Another violent crime just blocks from where I used to live. So glad I moved from that area!

Five months after Tewodros Gebreselassie was found guilty of helping his brother kill their sister-in-law and two of her family members during a 2006 Thanksgiving Day dinner, the 44-year-old was sentenced Wednesday to a lifetime in prison without the possibility of parole...

The murders of Winta Mehari, 28, her mother, Regbe Bahrengasi, 50, and her brother, Yonas Mehari, 17, occurred during a Thanksgiving Day gathering that was interrupted when Asmerom Gebreselassie barged into the family apartment and began shooting his handgun at anyone in his path...

Asmerom Gebreselassie was given the same punishment earlier this year...
