Teacher and husband accused of sexual abuse of student
Suspect's husband also accused of assault
(12/13/06 - HOUSTON) - A former elementary school teacher and her husband have been arrested and charged with sexually assaulting at least five of the woman's students, and police said Wednesday there may be more victims.
Brandy Lynn Gonzales, 27, and her 31-year-old husband, Johnny Gonzales, were arrested Monday, said Houston police Officer Gabe Ortiz.
Brandy Gonzales is charged with three counts of aggravated sexual assault and two counts of indecency with a child. She is in jail on $400,000 bond. Johnny Gonzales is charged with one count of aggravated sexual assault and is in jail on $200,000 bond.
Ortiz said investigators have spoken with five boys who reported being sexually assaulted during the spring of 2004, when they were students at Piney Point Elementary School, where Brandy Gonzales was a teacher.
Investigators said the assaults occurred on and off campus and that the boys ranged in age from 8-10 at the time. Police offered no other details.
The investigation began Dec. 4, when one of the boys reported his allegations to the Houston Independent School District's police department. Houston police were then contacted.
"What I want parents to ask their children is if there was any inappropriate contact between her and the teacher," urged John Barnes with the Houston Police Department. "Or if they saw something with another child."
Brandy Gonzales has worked for HISD for years, including working at Parker Elementary as a teacher's aide between August 1998 and June 2000. She resigned and came back as a teacher at Piney Point Elementary between December 2001 and July 2004. At that time, Gonzales was transferred to Park Place Elementary, where she worked between August 2004 and August 2005. At that time she resigned her position with HISD and went to work at a private school -- Clear Lake Christian Academy -- from August 2006 and May 2006.
"If these allegations are true, this is a shocking and deeply troubling abuse of trust by this former teacher," the district said in a statement. "We are deeply saddened by these allegations, and we are very concerned for the children involved and for all of the students and teachers at Piney Point."
