Police launch search for missing Purdue student
January 18, 2007
WEST LAFAYETTE--Police officers, friends and family members searched around the Purdue University campus for a freshman student who authorities said was last seen over the weekend. Tracking dogs and a helicopter were used in the search for Wade Steffey, 19, of Bloomington. He was reported missing after friends returned from the school's three-day break for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and could not find him.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. | Hundreds of volunteers joined police Thursday in an expanded search for a Purdue University freshman who has been missing since Saturday.
Wade S. Steffey, 19, was last seen leaving a party at the Phi Kappa Theta fraternity house on the north side of campus.
Police said Thursday that a $50 withdrawal from Steffey's bank account was made from an ATM at a campus dining hall at 8:30 p.m. last Friday. Originally, they thought the withdrawal was at 1:11 a.m. Saturday, but that was the time when bank records were downloaded, not when the withdrawal was made.
Police also said Steffey's cell phone was last used at 12:31 a.m. Saturday.
Purdue police and staff spent Thursday searching buildings, ravines and other spots on the West Lafayette campus. Tracking dogs and a helicopter were used in the search on Wednesday.
Parents of missing Purdue student search, wait and hope
It's been a rough few days for Dale Steffey and his wife Dawn Adams.
The parents of Purdue University student Wade S. Steffey, who's been missing since Friday night, the couple have spent the last few days in and out of local hotels and Purdue police headquarters.
The couple was at the police station Thursday afternoon, trying to grab a bite to eat after a talk with a counselor, when they agreed to an interview with the Journal & Courier. They were waiting for the start of a massive campus-wide search that began from the police station at 2 p.m.
Dale Steffey said he planned to take part in the search. A recent hip replacement prevented Adams from doing the same.
"She's had enough things to deal with without physical pain added on," Dale Steffey said.

I wonder if he uses a plane at an airport close to there. Aviation......
You would think he would have headed for his dorm/apartment without a jacket.

At a briefing event before the formation of a campus-wide search party for missing student Wade Steffey, Purdue Police reported that Steffey's bank account was accessed more than five hours earlier than they originally thought.
Chief Gary Evans of the Purdue Police Department said Steffey's account was originally thought to be accessed at 1:11 a.m. from an automated teller machine at Ford Dining Court, but that in actuality, it was the time the transaction was processed at his bank. The withdrawal occurred at 8 p.m., before Steffey went to Phi Kappa Theta fraternity at 900 David Ross Road. Police can't confirm whether or not it was Steffey who withdrew the $50 from the account because the video from the surveillance camera in Ford wasn't functioning properly.
Steffey, a freshman in the College of Technology who was reported missing Tuesday, was last seen at 12:31 a.m. Saturday by two female students near Owen Residence Hall.
More than 200 people lined up outside the Purdue Police Station at 2 p.m. today to search for Steffey, who has been missing since early Saturday morning.
According to Capt. John Cox of the Purdue Police, the search party was divided into 14 groups, with two of the larger teams to search west of West Lafayette and in the woods west of McCormick Road. The searchers are traveling on foot, with the exception of those in the larger parties, who were shuttled to campus' outskirts by Purdue buses. Some of the groups are accompanied by search dogs.
Cox said the police can not use a GPS tracking device to locate Steffey's cellular phone, because it does not have a compatible service.
Police advised searchers to look for the wallet of Steffey or any other wallet, and Steffey's cellular phone, which is a silver Verizon flip phone.
West Lafayette Police, Purdue Police, Tippecanoe County Sheriffs, a K-9 unit and one FBI agent were all on the scene.
Cox said there was a scent found near Cary Quadrangle, Steffey's residence hall, and down University Street. The scent, however, was what Cox called a "community scent" and was most likely from Steffey's route to classes and not a substantial lead.
Some professors canceled class so students would be able to join the search party; the searchers will continue to look for Steffey until nightfall.
Police were not handing out tickets to people who were parked in ԁ' parking near the station.
Steffey was last seen wearing a white long-sleeved shirt with light blue stripes and light-colored jeans. He is white with short brown hair and brown eyes. He is 5 foot 10 and weighs about 150 pounds. Anyone with information on Steffey's disappearance should contact the Purdue Police at

01/19/07: Search for missing student moves to the river, reward posted
By Staff Reports
Publication Date: 01/19/07
The search for Wade Steffey included investigating the Wabash River Friday.
Jeanne Norberg, Purdue spokeswoman, said the police had a boat on the river looking at the shoreline.
"We're looking everywhere," said Norberg. "There's not any particular reason (police are searching the river) other than they hadn't looked there yet."
Students from Purdue and Indiana universities, as well as other members of the two community will gather at 1:30 p.m. Saturday around the Purdue Bell Tower to pray for a missing freshman.
Steffey has not been seen for a week and hundreds of people from his hometown, Bloomington, Ind., have pledged to visit Purdue's campus to show their support.

"The cell phone of freshman Wade Steffey, who has been missing for almost one week, is expected to be located in a quadrant north of State Street, between Russell Street and Northwestern Avenue, said Purdue spokeswoman Jeanne Norberg. Norberg said the cell phone provider determined this was the last known location of the phone as of Wednesday."
There was the college guy who fell down a garbage chute...wasn't there one who fell down an elevator shaft?

Greta is talking about Wade tonight. When Wade left the low key party witnesses said he was not in the least bit impaired. His parents said the last time his mother spoke to him was when he left for school on Jan.7th after the holiday break.

Greta is interviewing the parents. Wade's residence was only a block away.

Interestingly enogh, on the same night of his dissapearances there were two reported assaults. One at 11:30 pm friday and one at 3 AM saturday.
I haven't been seeing this in the media for some reason.. maybe to keep from instilling fear in the students?
The one that occurred at 11:30 pm was in the exact area where he was last seen (on the phone in front of the dorm of his female friend) at approximately 12:30 AM. Steffey's dorm is maybe 800-900 feet from the female's dorm (according to Google earth measurements)
The attacks seem to be unrelated, as far as the suspects are concerned, but Purdue does not have a history of violence on campus. Although it sounds crazy, in my opinion the police composite released somewhat resembles Wade. Don't know what that might mean. Ive speculated that the victim of this 11:30 pm attack was convering something up and knew what Happened to Wade that night, but there being another assault kinda throws that out. To me his assault story just seems suspicous for various reasons.
I am adding info that I have discussed with friends and students of Purdue at the facebook group here:
