Austrian police uncover global child porn ring
600 Americans among 2,360 suspects believed involved, authorities say

VIENNA, Austria - Austrian authorities said Wednesday they have uncovered a major international child pornography ring involving more than 2,360 suspects from 77 countries, including hundreds in the United States, who paid to view videos of young children being sexually abused.

The children were under the age of 14 and screams could be heard, said Harald Gremel, an Austrian police expert on Internet crime who headed the investigation.

Within a 24-hour period, investigators recorded more than 8,000 hits from 2,361 computer I.P. addresses in 77 countries ranging from Algeria to South Africa, Gremel told reporters.

The videos were posted on a Russian Web site, and users had to pay $89 to access the material, Gremel said.

He said investigators believe the videos, which included images of girls and boys up to age 14, were made in Eastern Europe and uploaded to the site from somewhere in Britain.

    Angry

"The investigation began in July when a man working for a Vienna-based Internet file hosting service approached authorities at the Interior Ministry to say he noticed the pornographic material during a routine check, Gremel said.

The man blocked access to the videos while recording the I.P. addresses of people who continued to try to download the material, and gave the details to authorities. Neither the man nor the Vienna company were identified, and police said neither was implicated in the case.

Within a 24-hour period, investigators recorded more than 8,000 hits from 2,361 computer I.P. addresses in 77 countries ranging from Algeria to South Africa, Gremel told reporters.

The videos were posted on a Russian Web site, and users had to pay $89 to access the material, Gremel said."

OMG.. I am staggard by the sheer numbers of these hits and IP addresses..thats in one 24 hour period.. I would hate to see what the numbers are for a year on this site... This is truly frightening to know there are sooo many sick and perverted people willing to pay to watch the rape and sexual abuse of these children.. and no one did anything about it until this one man came foward. This man who ever he may be is a hero. I hope only good things come his way. He deserves a medal or something in recognition for his actions.

Amen, surely someone with money in this country that cares deeply for children can start publicizing who these people are in a NATIONAL way so everyone can know the vile people they are. My bet is alot of people would be very suprised, but it may help net alot more of them, once people start seeing faces of these evil people. We should be using every humiliation and embarrassment trick in the book to out these people, as it stands now, even if some are prosecuted and sentenced, there is little chance that the vast majority of Americans will ever hear about it or know their faces. This needs to be like the Yahoo or Ebay of criminals who prey on children. Know them, oust them, never take them off of this website and record the number of hits to know how many concerned Americans would hit this website everyday to see if their doctor, lawyer, teacher, or bus driver shows up on there.....

    Gotta Rant

What in God's name is appealing to people about witnessing children being brutalized? I cannot grasp what makes some people (and way more than I ever wanted to believe) want to view this filth. IMO, this can't just be attributed to some type of mental pathology. This is inhumane. This is on par with watching people being tortured or executed. Is there some part of the human mind that actually enjoys seeing another human being, especially a young child, being victimized and maimed in this manner? It's enough to make me want to switch species sometimes.

If only more Internet service providers were responsible about what they allow on their servers. I think Internet service providers should be held way more accountable in these types of of situations. This is a case where 'Big Brother is watching you' is a good thing.

I think there needs to be tougher laws straight across the board when it comes to child pornography. Mandatory life sentences and even the death penalty for the ones who produce and distribute it, long jail sentences and severe fines for the sick bastards that look at it. To me, anything to do with child pornography is as bad as murder and someone involved in that does not deserve to breathe the same air as the rest of us. A child's soul is murdered when they are victimized in this way, but they have to live with it the rest of their lives. THIS HAS TO STOP!!!

I would like to see every photo, name, age, birthdate, birthplace, eye colour, hair colour, height, weight, shoe size, nickname, pet's name, car make and model of every SOB involved in this plastered on a billboard as big as Yankee stadium for the whole world to see. I'd even pay for the ad space if I could.
People need to know that (for the most part) these aren't slobbering greaseball pedophiles (an apt description, but I digress) that sit in front of their computer all day looking at this filth. These are 'normal' everyday people that you may interact with on a daily basis. It might be the guy at the convenience store who sold you your lottery ticket. It might be the receptionist at your dentist's office. If might be the guy who does your taxes or sold you your home. Whoever they are, they need to be exposed. I'm so sick of hearing these stories. My son will be 2 on Friday and the thought of him ever being victimized like this just paralyzes me with anger and makes me feel powerless at the same time.

Totally agree.. but I think in all honesty the public at large must make it known that we are not willing to have any more children victimized. But ISP's and others should be willing to track these hits on sites such as this one. There has to be responsibility beyond the check a box to agree to the terms sort of action. That just doesnt cut it anymore. Unfoirtunately even with laws in place if there is any wiggle room on the sentance then we will continue to have these lame A** judges that let these perverts off with a slap on the wrist. The laws need to be designed so there is no room for a slap on the wrist.
