Wis. man’s good intentions die by the sword

He breaks into apartment, mistaking *advertiser censored* screams for actual rape

OCONOMOWOC, Wis. - A man said he broke into an apartment with a cavalry sword because he thought he heard a woman being raped, but the sound actually was from a pornographic movie his upstairs neighbor was watching.
“Now I feel stupid,” said James Van Iveren, who has been charged in the case. “This really is nothing, nothing but a mistake.”

According to a criminal complaint, the neighbor told police that Van Iveren pounded on the door and kicked it open without warning Feb. 12, damaging the frame and lock.

“Where is she?” Van Iveren demanded, thrusting the sword at the neighbor, the complaint said. “Where is she?”

The neighbor told police Van Iveren became increasingly aggressive as he repeated the question, insisting that he had heard a woman being raped. The complaint said that, with the sword pointed at him, the neighbor led Van Iveren throughout the apartment, opening closet doors to prove he was alone.

The neighbor later played for police the part of the DVD he believed Van Iveren heard downstairs.

Okay here's my question....why did freak boy need his *advertiser censored* turned up so loud that the neighbors could here it? If you need your *advertiser censored* turned up that loud get some headphones. I would find it offensive to be sitting in my apt and have to hear that and I hope no kids heard it. He should be charged for something, there has to be a sound ordinance.

Do some *advertiser censored* movies have rape-related themes? As in, the woman "screaming for help" would have sounded authentic? If so, I can see why a neighbor might come to that conclusion. He probably would have been wiser to call 911.

Adding my own :twocents:, I'm no fan of *advertiser censored* (and don't know much about it), but I always thought consensual sex was the standard. The notion that rape could be realistically portrayed as a plot point in an adult entertainment film sickens me.

There's *advertiser censored* for every taste - including rape and non-consensual sex.

Thank you, southcitymom, for an answer that isn't graphic, but tells me all I need to know.

Well, we don't know that he's a freak, lots of people are into *advertiser censored*, but yeah you think he would get some headphones or have it at a reasonable level ie so all the neighbours couldn't hear.

Could be that the walls are paper thin. I bet he'll be turning it down during future viewings....

I have no problem with *advertiser censored*. But if *advertiser censored* depicting rape isn't freaky, what is? (I suppose it's possible that something sounded like rape in the next apartment, but clearly wasn't at all when viewing the DVD.)

We don't know that it was *advertiser censored* depicting rape though, but I agree that kind of *advertiser censored* is not my cup of tea and wonder how people get off on stuff like that...do you think they are would be rapists guys that get into that kind of *advertiser censored*?

I actually thought it was great that the neighbor was willing to get involved. Too many times we hear about situations where something bad really is happening and people don't do anything.

Most renters would just pound on the ceiling with a broom if the upstairs tenants were noisy. This guy has been watching way too many "hero saving the damsel in distress" movies on his new flatscreen TV. He probably had the sword right by the front door, along with his cape, so he could grab them on his way.

I'm sure plenty of rapists get into this type of *advertiser censored*, but I have a few suburban mom housewife friends who like it as well. Some studies have shown that rape (or being forcibly overpowered) is a fairly common female sexual fantasy.

The fact is if there had been a rape this man would be a hero...

So few neighbors bother to get involved ... wheather its children being abused or an elderly person alone ....

Now you tell me.

Why didn't he just call the police?! Response time, maybe?

My first apartment had extremely thin walls. My next door neighbors were VERY loud whether they were fighting or doing the horizontal mambo. It was embarrassing when I had friends over, but usually we ended up laughing about it. One time we clapped loudly after a particularly noisy session. :p

He didn't have a phone.

Actually, I suspect it's a nearly universal fantasy: who doesn't want to think himself or herself so overwhelming attractive that nothing can deter a suitor? But when it is a man fantasizing about an overly aggressive woman (see every teen comedy film ever made), it often isn't called "rape."

In any event, the fantasy is a far cry from the act. And should not be taken as proof of the vile, old adage that women really want to be attacked.

I agree with scmom: yeah, a few people who favor such *advertiser censored* may also be rapists, but as with any erotica, the vast majority of people can distinguish between role-play and reality.

(BTW, I don't know about hetero *advertiser censored*, but a gay *advertiser censored* DVD is often assembled from a number of scenes from different sources. Not everything on any one disc will be to everyone's taste. So I guess I'm contradicting what I wrote above: even if there was a rape role-play scene on the DVD, it may not have been particularly exciting to the disc owner.)

Absolutely! I hope they drop the charges against him.
