MA - Helena Fells, 49, Dracut, Nov 2006

LOWELL -- Helena Fells went missing in late November, a 49-year-old Dracut woman whose family searched everywhere for her until they found her car parked at Consumer Auto Parts on First Street in Lowell.
A police dog was called in, and tracked her scent to the banks of the Merrimack River.
Fells has not been seen or heard from since. She disappeared about the same time police were searching the Merrimack River for the body of Ronald Wetmore Jr., a UMass-Lowell senior who fell from the Textile Memorial Bridge on University Avenue.

I hope she had just gone and stood by the river but didn't go into it. How sad.

SEARCHING, AND HOPING: Volunteers scour Merrimack for Dracut woman missing since '06

It has been nearly three years since Helena Fells was last seen, but as roughly 20 people searched for even the faintest sign of the 49-year-old Dracut woman along the Merrimack River yesterday, a bit of hope emerged.

Fells went missing in late November 2006. Her car was parked at Consumer Auto Parts, near Bridge Street and VFW Highway in Lowell. A police dog tracked her scent from the car to the icy banks of the river.

Despite several large searches organized over the years by her sister, Linda Morrissette, no signs of Fells have ever turned up.

But yesterday, about 20 feet out from the riverbank near the Dracut-Methuen town line, a cadaver dog got a hit on an area of water.

Methuen group combs river for missing woman's body

It's been two and a half long years since Helena Fells of Dracut is believed to have disappeared into the murky, fast-running waters of the Merrimack River.

This weekend, for the second summer in a row, teams of volunteers led by the Methuen-based Clean River Project searched the river's rocky bottom and densely vegetated shoreline from Lowell to Lawrence for Fells' remains. They were assisted yesterday by search and recovery experts from Maine and a cadaver-sniffing dog named Quincy.

Fells' sister, Linda Morrissette of Lowell, believes Fells, 49, committed suicide on Nov. 26, 2006, by jumping into the Merrimack River in Lowell.

The family of a Dracut woman missing for more than four years is hoping they may finally be able to lay her to rest after a river cleanup crew found a shoe containing human remains on the banks of the Merrimack River.
"I've been praying it's her," said Lowell resident Linda Morrissette, whose younger sister, 49-year-old Helena Fells, disappeared near the Merrimack River in Lowell December 2006............more at link above

HAVERHILL — A woman's shoe containing a bone that was found on the banks of the Merrimack River may provide a clue about the fate of Helena Fells of Dracut, who has been missing since 2006.

Her sister, Linda Morrissette of Lowell, said she has been waiting months to see the shoe or even a photograph of it, but was told she could not because it had been sent to the medical examiner's office.

Officials said they now plan to grant Morrissette's request. The shoe and bone were found in West Newbury earlier this year.

"We will make arrangements for her to look at a photograph of the shoe," said Stephen O'Connell, a spokesman for Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett.
