AL - 12-year-old caught with gun

This happened at my daughter's school on Thursday. She often walks down to the Rec Center after school that adjoins the middle school but did not on Thursday.

Reportedly planned to shoot student after school

A 12-year-old Opelika Middle School student packed a pistol in his book bag Thursday, reportedly with the intent to shoot another student after school at the Opelika Recreation Center on Denson Drive.

What could have been a deadly day at OMS turned into an "eye-opener" instead, after a fellow student came forward with information about the gun. OMS Principal Kenneth Burton notified police and Opelika City Schools Superintendent Dr. Mark Neighbors.

After a search of the student locker, an unloaded 9mm semi-automatic pistol was found in the student’s book bag. The gun is capable of holding a 30-round magazine.

"My mouth dropped open when I saw the gun in the bag," Burton said. "We’ve had OMS threats before and not found anything of this nature."

I just don't understand kids today. It seems so easy for them to get a gun to settle disagreements. This could have turned out tragic if not for the student who stepped up to let the principal know about the gun. He saved lives and families heart ache. Kudos to that child!

Holy cow this is so scary. I have a 12yo son, and I cannot even imagine him or any of his friends doing something like this. Of course, I cannot imagine any of them having access to a 9mm semi-automatic weapon, either. How did he get it? Is it the parents' gun? Was it not locked up? Will they be charged?

Luckily the worst thing to happen at my kids' school lately is some 7th graders got busted for bringing Air Soft guns to a dance (they were spending the night at one kid's house and were planning to have a battle the next day). They were all expelled under the zero tolerance policy.

A real gun would flip me out.

I wonder if they found an annunition on this kid? A 12 yr old...unbelievable.
I'll bet the gun belongs to his dad. Even though it wasn't loaded it still should have been locked up or hidden where he wouldn't know where it was. I guess parents are just to trusting with their kids these days. His dad probably never dreamed he would take the gun to school to shoot someone. Thank God someone had the courage to go to the school officials and tell. I would imagine that the kid isn't in school anymore.

My grandson was involved in an argument at his school and supposedly one of the boys threatened to bring a knife to school. The boy who told was accused of lying and got into trouble. I asked the principal if this boy or his things were searched and he wasn't. They determined that since the boys were so upset about one being called a crybaby but not upset over the knife that it couldn't be true. I'm glad this school did believe the child and did a search before something horrible happened.

Vicki, that is horrible! If I were the parents of the child accused of lying I would be making a big stink. How are we supposed to teach kids to come forward with this kind of info if they are called tattletales when they do?

This is the kind of attitude that ends up with the school being on the news.
