I was one of two people who saw the Ayres sex ed series at a screening two years ago provided by the San Francisco PBS station KQED. We only saw a couple of episodes. But the ones we saw were bizarre. In one scene, Ayres ( who sounds and looks like a taller version of Truman Capote, but with more hair) puts a sweater over his shoulder and punches his fist through a folded sleeve. He was demonstrating how the foreskin on a penis retracts. He pushes his fist through the sleeve repeatedly, and dramatically. This was performed in front of little boys and girls seated on the television stage.
That fist-through-the- sleeve sweater scene was so weird that even the publicist for KQED was covering his eyes with his hands. At other times, the publicist seemed completely embarrassed by Ayres' series, and rolled his eyes a lot and laughed nervously.
How this creepy show ever was nationally televised to school age children during the 1960s, I will never know.

little early to send me running for the vomit bag today......
Hey, I wonder if anyone can grab a screen shot from it to show Ayres at that age?
When friends (who don't know that I'm involved in this crap) say "truth is stranger than fiction" I always do a bit of a spit-take, at how little they know. It's a bit like being part of an improbable Hollyweird drama. Some times you just step back and say:
There is a photo of Ayres from the San Francisco Chronicle in 1968 in a story about the controversy about the series. Alas, there are very few copies of this show " A Time of Your Life" available. It was shot on video and KQED had to rent special equipment and a screening room to show it.
Throughout the show, Ayres shows naked photos of adults. He talks about sex in a very detached and flat lifeless voice. I suppose he was trying to act professorial (but instead he just ends up sounding depressed). To my mind, he used the nude photos to desensitize children about sex in the same way that pedophiles show porn photos to kids to groom and desensitize them.
One of Ayres' former medical partners said that he found Ayres sex ed series to be so disgusting, graphic, and "over the top" that he stopped watching after he saw the fist-through-the- sleeve episode. This partner said he felt that Ayres was using the show to "procure."
NBC News in San Francisco: "Watched Child Molestation Trial Takes New Turn"
On Tuesday, Ayres appeared in court with his new defense attorney Jonathan McDougall, who requested doctors examine the competency of his patient.
Judge Beth Freeman agreed to suspend criminal proceedings in the case and appointed two doctors to examine Ayres.
McDougall did not give a reason in court for why he believes his client may not be competent to stand trial. He did not immediately return a call today seeking comment.
Ayres' lawyer didn't give a reason because he doesn't have one. Hope the San Mateo DA is going to fight back hard. Seems to me the judge has given everything to Ayres.

I just want to get this clear-
Ayres attorney is implying that Ayres lacks the basic ability to understand the charges and participate in his own defense.
The judge has to give the defendant the ability to take this angle because of "due process" according to Wikipedia: [ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mental_competency[/ame]
But the defense must really believe Ayres will lose this time,so this is really just a delay tactic.
The question becomes has he been diagnosed with Parkinsons, Alzheimers or dementia recently? They might be able to make a case for incompetency based upon an organic process....otherwise, Ayres is going to have to fool two of his own by being nuttier than a....well you know all of the phrases.
Did the court appoint the evaluators or was Ayres attorney allowed to choose? I would think the state should make absolutely certain that the evaluators are not associated with Ayres either through his work done with inmates or (God forbid) having any similar beliefs regarding patient boundaries....
or trained at Judge Baker Guidance Center...no offense to the Guidance center

is dr johnson around?
would love to hear her excuses for that video.
I wish California Attorney General \|Jerry Brown had thought of this for the Ayres case:
This week, the two lawyers hired by pedophile pediatrician Dr. Earl Bradley- who is awaiting arraignment and has been charged with 471 counts of rape and child exploitation involving 103 victims.
backed out of the case because Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden (son of Joe) froze the good doctor's assets. Seems that before the lawyers dropped out, they were pursuing the same "mental competency" meme that Ayres' lawyer brought up this week. That's done and gone. Bradley will have to face his trial with a public defender.
I am wondering why his assets were frozen-and I am willing to bet he has some ill gotten gains associated with his crimes....JMO. As in he sold some of the tape...That or taxes owed.
The Ayres blog has a new icky photo of Ayres up from 1968, when the good doctor was 36.
There's also an annoucement about the talk journalist Victoria Balfour is giving tomorrow, March 20 on the Ayres case at the Male Survivor conference in NYC.
No, I don't know if there will be an audio or video. There are tons of workshops going on at the same time at the Conference this weekend.
No word on audio/video yet, but there is a report from Victoria Balfour on how the talk went (just go to the bottom of the post, and it's in the comments as well):

Concerning the ill-fated sex-ed training films, I found this:
"Ayres achieved national fame in 1968, after he co-scripted and helped narrate “The Time of Your Life,” a 13-part television series produced by KQED for use with fourth- through sixth-grade students that teaches the broad topic of family life, including candid sexual discussion. It was praised by educators and doctors, according to San Francisco Examiner and San Francisco Chronicle newspaper articles of the time, but a number of parents objected loudly, declaring it “pornographic.” Ayres himself said the series was helpful to children.
“For many years, kids have been coming into my office knowing some of the ‘facts of life,’ but with many facts left out. They wind up being bewildered, with a great many concerns and anxieties resulting from their lack of knowledge,” he told The New York Times in 1969.
School officials at the time praised Ayres’ approach....."

Note--When I was doing some research lately into the sad early death of a Croatian young man, Vladik Shibanov (who was exploited throughout his short life for the creation of "Boylove" films), I remember coming upon a sex-ed film which was clearly created as thinly veiled child porn:
You'll note that there's warnings about "extensive nudity of a medical nature" and "Viewer discretion due to naturist European culture". I started a thread on poor Vlad, who has a dedicated fan base even after his death. His films can be found on the above linked site. I have no doubt in my mind that Ayres owns the boxed set.
Ayres had a collection of picture books of nude adolescent boys in various stages of undress. The book is called "Coming of Age" and it is banned in this country. He also had a couple of other sex books with nude photos of boys.
I often wonder if he showed these books to his son in adolescence.
Ayres' new lawyer sure likes that mental incompetency ploy- he's also trying to get a potential teenage high school bomber declared mentally incompetent as well.
And for some reason, one doctor's reports for the kid keep getting delayed. I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happened in the Ayres trial.

People are wondering where Ayres is getting his fix of boys these days now that he is no longer allowed to treat them. A poster over at the San Mateo Daily Journal compares ayres' case to that of fellow Judge Baker alum and pedophile child psychiatrist Dr. Donald Lee Rife.
