    Australia - Johanne Hatty, 24, raped & murdered, Sydney, 18 Feb 1984

DNA leads to murder arrest 23 yrs later

Advances in DNA profiling helped catch Johanne Hatty's alleged killer more than two decades after she was strangled and raped just 30 metres from her Sydney home, a Sydney court has been told.
The development in DNA technology meant police were able to link swabs taken from the 24-year-old's body following her murder in February 1984 to a sample taken from her alleged killer 20 years later, the NSW Supreme Court heard.
David Graham Fleming, a 54-year-old invalid pensioner, has pleaded not guilty to murdering Miss Hatty near her home in the harbourside suburb of Neutral Bay in the early hours of February 18, 1984.

I hope he's put away forever because the DNA results so strongly pointing at him does it for me:

"The probabilities of another person in the general population other than the accused sharing that same DNA profile is about one in 8.6 billion," Mr Hoyle said.

    throw away the key.

DNA is so incredible--Thank God the British discovered it about 20 years ago--Its a tremendous forensic tool for determining both guilt and innocence--DNA was first used by the British to solve a child rape killing in a small town of 5000 people--The book is called The Blooding

Colin Pitchfork (born 1961, Bristol, England) was the first criminal caught based on DNA fingerprinting evidence. Pitchfork raped and murdered two girls in Narborough, Leicestershire, on 21 November 1983, and on 31 July 1986. He was arrested on 19 September 1987, confessed, and was sentenced to life in prison on 23 January 1988.

    From June 2007:

A Victorian pensioner, David Graham Fleming, was today jailed for up to 21 years for the murder of Sydney woman Johanne Hatty, whose body was found strangled and sexually assaulted in 1984...

Fleming, 54, who had spent six years in a Queensland prison for rape shortly before Hatty's death, also had a history of mental illness and self-harm, Justice Studdart said.
