LAKE COUNTY, Fla. -- A Lake County retirement community never expected to see such a crime. A husband and wife got into a knife fight and it had deadly consequences.

People who live in the Plantation at Leesburg said they're very shocked. It's a gated community of mostly retired folks over 55, but domestic violence can happen at any age, the sheriff's office said.

People who live in the Plantation at Leesburg said it's not just a place to retire. It's a place to stay busy. While the active adults are used to manicured lawns and flowers, they aren't accustomed to sheriff's cars and detectives swarming their 55 and over neighborhood.

You have to wonder if for many years this couple was mired in discontent. The retirement aspect isn't as importent as the chronic abusive situation that I am sure we will hear about.

I am not ready to sell billboards..but divorce is an option. Just because they are older with probably older children or not, the fact that a death occurred is almost assured that abuse is present.

I am probably more willing than most to go the extra mile but to live constantly with this and to die from this after such a long time of knowing is something we need to work on.

Retired businessman Hugo "Bud" Kladivko, one of the oldest inmates in Florida's prison system, wants a judge to overturn his murder conviction and release him from a life sentence in the killing of his wife, Brenda...

Kladivko contends he acted in self-defense May 8, 2007, when he stabbed his wife 16 times during a squabble at their home in The Plantation at Leesburg, a golfing community for older active adults...

Gruesome crime-scene photos were key pieces of evidence during Kladivko's trial... "The pictures lost the case," Spivey said from the witness stand. "They are absolutely, without question, some of the most horrendous, 'butchering' photos that, in my 20 years, I have ever seen, and I have seen some bad ones."
