Interesting hypothesis on this case in another thread:
http://websleuths.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1511530...

The other thread mentioned is a thread about possible connected cases under the Featured Case of the Lyon Sisters, Missing from Wheaton Plaza, Montgomery County, Maryland since 25 March 1975.

In that thread, a number of cases are mentioned as having similarities and possible connections to the unsolved case.

One of the strongest possible suspects in the Lyon Sisters disappearance is convicted pedophile and child murderer, Fred Howard Coffey, Jr. Fred Coffey lived and worked in Montgomery County, Maryland from AT LEAST April, 1975 when he began working for Vitro Laboratories (a Defense Contractor) until he suddenly left town in late July 1975. His rapid departure followed an unsolved attack on a 14 year old girl, Kathy Lynn Beatty in or near the VITRO parking lot in Aspen Hill, MD - only a few miles from where the Lyon Sisters were last seen.

Coffey came to Maryland LE attention in 1987 when he was convicted in North Carolina of 9 counts of child molestation and later was convicted of the murder of a five year old girl.

Judy Ann Sylvester's case is an unsolved Missing Person Case from Virginia Beach, which was home to Fred Coffey in 1975 and location of at least two other crimes against children committed by Coffey; the abduction and rape of a 13 year old girl in 1974, and "contributing to the delinquency of a minor" with a 15 year old girl in October 1975.

Note that although Judy was 22 years old (older than most of Fred's known victims), she was only 5 feet tall and weighed just 100 pounds. Note also that she had blue eyes - as did the Lyon Sisters.

Just reading through a couple of cases that mention Fred Coffey and noticing the blue eyes. Interesting because Fred Coffey has blue eyes himself. That can be confirmed by looking at his profile on North Carolina Department of Corrections.

POSTED BY JUDY'S SISTER, DOROTHY: I was informed that Judy's bike was in her apartment and that her boyfriend took it. He lived in her apartment after she came up missing. My mom and I are still trying to get some answers / closure...we miss you so much Judy!

There isn't alot of info on her case. We don't know the boyfriend's name. It seems pretty clear cut if she was riding her bike and disappeared and the bike is then found in the apt.

It has been some time since anyone has posted to this thread. Judy Ann Sylvester has been missing for over 33 years now.

I wonder if her disappearance is related to either or both of the following unsolved cases:

Barbara Jean Monaco , 18
Missing since August 20, 1978 from Virginia Beach, Virginia

Marcia Estelle Remick, 17
Missing since June 9, 1979 from Virginia Beach, Virginia

They are all three brunettes, petite, and were around the ocean front area. Thanks for bumping and linking.

This is very interesting from what is being posted about this case, and the other ones too, relating to the Virginia Beach area. I'm starting to see a pattern here... There was a was 24 year old female, Lorraine (Lorrie) Zimmerman, who was from Seattle, and had traveled to Virginia Beach with a girlfriend during the summer of 1977.

Zimmerman had been in the area for a short while. She was last seen July 16, leaving a nightclub with an unidentified man, and went missing for six months. Her body was found 100 miles north in December of that year. Police at that time couldn't determine a cause of death. Her clothes were found in pile in a wooded area near her body. Police also discovered her boots that had orthopedic braces attached from a walking disability she had.

I'm not sure if her case was solved or not; I cannot find any info on this after the article that is linked below. And there is nothing here in Seattle that mentions the case or parents after that. I get the impression it was never solved.

January 24th will mark the 35 year anniversary of Judy's disappearance.

Keep an eye out for any "anniversary" articles in the media which might provide new information.

I hope that her family gets some answers.

Judy was known to often ride a bicycle in the Virginia Beach area. But this was winter and likely rather cold. Does anyone know if her bicycle was also missing? Did she have a motor vehicle, and was it missing? If she did not have a vehicle, perhaps she accepted a ride somewhere - rather than walk or ride her bike.

I noticed a pattern with Monaco, Remick, Judy and now the one you mentioned. There were also three unsolved murders in the oceanfront area around the time of these disappearances. The victims of the double murder were both brunettes like the 3 missings, but the other 2 crimes involved blondes. The locations and ages match though.

1977 – Judy Sylvester, 22, – Virginia Beach, Virginia

A

According to the NamUs website, Judy Ann Sylvester, 22, was residing in an apartment located at the north end of Virginia Beach at the time of her disappearance. She was employed at a local restaurant and failed to arrive as scheduled to work on January 24, 1977, and never retrieved her paycheck. She has never been seen or heard from again.

The website also clearly points out that Sylvester “frequently rode a bicycle while living in Virginia Beach.” This would seem to indicate that the bicycle had something to do with her disappearance.

However, according to a 2010 post on Websleuths.com by Judy’s sister, Dorothy, the bicycle was left in her apartment and “her boyfriend took it” after Sylvester went missing. Dorothy also wrote that the boyfriend was living in the apartment after Sylvester disappeared.

Unfortunately, there is no more information about the boyfriend, including his name or if he had any possible connection to the case.

A sensational new theory about Sylvester’s disappearance was introduced in 2011 by Norfolk, Virginia, television station WTKR which speculated she was the victim of an unknown and previously undeclared serial killer. In a three part series, WTKR reporters pointed out the physical similarities in the murders of eleven women in the Virginia Beach area between 1973 and 1985: they were young, between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five, white, and pretty.

Sylvester was one of three women whose description and disappearance during that same time period lined-up with the signature of the “Virginia Beach Serial Killer.’ Unfortunately, at the end of the three-part series, there are no conclusive links between the eleven murdered girls, or the disappearance of Sylvester and two other young ladies, both in their teens.

Description: Judy Sylvester was a tiny girl, standing only five-feet or five-feet one-inch, and weighed approximately 100-pounds when she disappeared. She had brown hair and blue eyes and if she were alive today, she would be sixty-one-years-old. She was wearing a handmade necklace when she vanished.
