Police believe young boys found dead in trunk of car locked themselves in by accident
LONDON, Ky. (AP) — Two young brothers accidentally locked themselves in the trunk of their mother's car and were found dead about four hours after they were reported missing, state police said Sunday.
"Preliminarily, it appears that this is just a tragedy," said state Trooper Don Trosper. "These boys were out playing and they accidentally got themselves locked in the trunk."
Their grandparents called police Saturday to say they had not seen their grandsons for about three hours, said Laurel County Coroner Doug Bowling.
The bodies were found in the trunk of a 1996 car at their mother's home, about two miles south of London in eastern Kentucky, Bowling said. Federal law requires cars made beginning in 2002 to have release latches inside the trunk.
Bowling identified the boys as 8-year-old Chase Baker and 11-year-old Coty Baker. He said a state medical examiner was performing autopsies.
It took them 3 hours to realize the kids were not around? What a tragedy. Prayers for all the people that love and miss these angels.Happy New Years

I hate to be hard on the GrandParents but as a GrandParent myself, I think that 3 hours without seeing an 8 & 11 year old is too long. IMO, these ages especially the 11 year old seem a little to old to do something like this too.Retired 08/03/03

The family should have drilled it into these boys' not to play in anything that could shut and lock them inside; car trunks, old refrigerators.. When i was a child, my family made it clear that i knew. 11 years old does sound odd to play in a car trunk..

Maybe the 11 yr old is a young 11 yr old. Him and his brother were probably playing some kind of a game and didn't know that the trunk would lock and they couldn't get out of it. What a horrible terrifying way for them to die. My heart goes out to the mom and grandparents. What a horrible thing to happen to them and the boys.
We don't know how long the boys were searched for and we don't know how long the boys usually played outside without checking in. Depending on where they live...in town or outside of town...maybe they didn't have to check in every 15 minutes. Especially if they lived in the country and were used to having the run of their property like country kids are. No one is to blame for this...it was clearly an accident and this family lost two children. Very sad.
