Officials in Minot are confirming it was a stabbing that killed Minot State University Anita Knutson more than a week ago at her off-campus apartment

Minot Police say they've received preliminary autopsy results

Lieutenant Dan Strandberg says official reports from the autopsy are not in, but observations from it show the Minot State University student was stabbed twice, causing her death.

(Lt. Dan Strandberg, Minot Police Detective) "In my experience the victim and the suspects have always had a close relationship. However in this case we're not able to ascertain any of that and it is a little unsettling, yes."

He's talking about the death of a Minot State University student who was killed in her north Minot apartment - apparently by an unuknown intruder - over the weekend.

Minot police said today 18-year old Anita Knutson, a Velva High School graduate of 2006 and a native of Butte, was foUND dead in her apartment yesterday.

The young woman's body was discovered at this apartment Monday afternoon by her father, who was worried about her after not being able to contact her over the weekend.

IMO, just based on what I've read, I'd be surprised if she was killed by someone she knew. Two stab wounds? Very clean cut killing and doesn't seem personal to me.

Just my opinion though. Very sad story...she was a beautiful girl!

What a beauty she was. I wonder if it was someone who had a thing for her and she didn't care for him? I wonder how the killer got into the apartment?
Any prints on the knife that they found? I really hope that the catch the monster that did this.

It appears this murder has never been solved. What a shame.

"You have a young, popular lady who doesn't appear to have enemies or anything of that nature found killed in the apartment that she lived in. Generally those things you start from the inside and look out and typically you find something pretty close to home. At the onset of this case we didn't feel that it would be seven years later and here we are without a resolution yet."

Very, very sad. The older articles about the case are no longer available. I wonder if there were any signs of forced entry or anything else in her apartment disturbed.

Knife attacks are generally very personal. There have been several knife killings of late by teens against their classmates and friends. Even the CA rampage killer (no name, please) killed his roommates using a knife but used a gun on his attack against the public.

I wonder if LE has concentrated on males who might have had a grudge against or an obsession with Ms. Knutson. Have they considered it could have been a female? Did Ms. Knutson begin seeing someone new shortly before her murder....someone involved in a nasty breakup? Seems Ms. Knutson was likely familiar with her assailant if she allowed him/her entrance into her apartment, especially at night. It doesn't sound like LE know when (date, or time of day/night) Ms. Knutson was killed. Was she dressed for bed?

Just some thoughts. Hope the new investigators find something that will solve this murder.

Bumping for Anita! Just heard about this case. Sad how many unsolved and missing cases there are. Prayers for justice! :candle:

"Eight Years After Brutal Murder, Sister Still Looking for Answers"

http://www.nbcnews.com/feature/cold-case-spotlight/eight-years-later-sister-still-looking-answers-n343901

According to Minot Police, more than 40 people were interviewed. Leads were chased and, at first, police had no shortage of possible suspects; the maintenance worker who had done work at the apartment complex that morning, a man seen running in the area by a neighbor, one of Anita's new college friends. As the statements piled up, the evidence did not point to anyone in particular. The trail had gone cold.

That was nearly eight years ago.

"There really hasn't been much of a development in the past few years at all, nothing substantial that is," Anna said.

‘Justice for Anita’: Family wants to keep memory alive

Anita Knutson, who was found murdered in her Minot apartment eight years ago, would have turned 27 on Tuesday. In the eight years since her death the police have investigated various leads and suspects, but so far none have led to a break in the case. Minot Police Chief Jason Olson said Tuesday that it is still very much an open investigation. Olson urged anyone who might have information about the case to contact the police department.

North Dakota Cold Case Mystery: Who Killed Anita Knutson?

http://crimewatchdaily.com/2016/02/29/north-dakota-cold-case-mystery-who-killed-anita-knutson/

Whether she was hamming it up for the camera or out dancing with the girls Anita Knutson was the kind of person almost everyone liked having around.

"Anita was the coolest girl. Everybody at school loved her. I was really lucky to have her as my sister," said Anna Knutson, Anita's younger sister.

When she was just a baby, Anita was taken in by Gordon and Sharon Knutson, and her adoptive siblings Daniel and Anna soon followed.

At only 18, Anita was living on her own, working two jobs, and putting herself through college at Minot State University in Minot, North Dakota.

Many people wanted to be close to Anita. Until someone got too close.

10 years later: The Anita Knutson murder

http://www.minotdailynews.com/news/local-news/2017/06/10-years-later/

Ten years ago she was a young college student with her entire life in front of her. Today she lies beneath the sod in a small cemetery near Butte, the hometown of her adoptive parents. Anita Knutson was murdered 10 years ago today. The attractive, likeable Minot State University student was 18 years old at the time of her death.

No one has been arrested or charged for the crime, a fact that has been festering with family members and law enforcement alike who would like an answer, closure, to who is responsible for the murder.

Numerous suspects have been investigated and interviewed, some multiple times. The lengthy list includes a maintenance man, roommate, roofing workers, a jogger, dance partners, college students, a group of Spanish-speaking men and others. Police continue to check every possible lead but, thus far, without any favorable results. The mystery of who killed Anita Knutson remains painfully unsolved.

Hello,

I would like to preface this by saying I am not a websleuth, I am merely asking for help.

I have been heavily involved in seeking justice for Anita Knuston. She was murdered in her off campus apartment in the city of Minot, 14 years ago this June. Her case remains unsolved and is now considered a cold case. Over the past 14 years her family and friends have done whatever they could to keep her case in the spotlight. We have put up billboards and requested news channels to run stories.

Anita Knutson was 18 years old in 2007 and working full time while attending college at Minot State University. She was reported found in her apartment lying face down, stabbed several times, covered with her own bathrobe early afternoon on Monday June 4th 2007.

Her mother, Sharon Knutson, generally spoke to her everyday. Anita didn't answer her call on Saturday, June 2 and Sharon didn't receive a call back on Sunday. When Anita failed to answer her phone again on Monday, Anita’s father drove to her apartment to check up on her. He arrived to find her car parked but she did not answer her door and it was locked. He went to the manager's office and asked to be let into the apartment. He called the manager to open up the apartment who pointed out that a screen had been cut in one of the windows and was laying on the ground.

Her father pushed aside the blinds and saw Anita face down on her bed. He reached his arm through and touched her head and knew instantly that she was dead. As they entered the apartment, nothing looked out of the ordinary until they walked into Anita's room. Her bed was covered with blood, she was face down and her body was covered with an old robe. She had been brutally stabbed in the upper body numerous times. The murder weapon, a pocket knife, was laying on the floor at the foot of her bed (or in the sink--reports are conflicting on this detail).

Her recorded time of death on her death certificate is Monday, June 4th at 5:15pm. This is when she was pronounced dead and not her actual time of death. Per the Grand Forks Herald article, linked below, Anita’s speculated time of death was Sunday morning June 3rd. She spoke with her mother Friday night, June 1st, but then failed to show up for work on Saturday or return her mother's call for the remainder of the weekend, leading me to believe her time of death may be inaccurate. Another detail that emerged was that the screen in her bedroom had been cut seemingly after the murder from the inside. If that is the case, how did the perpetrator get inside? Then, there is the question of motive, there was no robbery or sexual assault, no drugs or alcohol were found in Anita's system and she had no known connections to questionable people or activities.

Police have spoken to and investigated hundreds of people: neighbors, classmates, and people who attended the same club she liked to spend weekend nights at. No promising leads turned up. There have been several people of interest, but nothing has warranted an arrest.

From there, the case turned cold. No new leads and no arrests have ever been made. However, the tragedy of Anita's murder created another massive blow to the Knutson family. Daniel Knutson, Anita's younger brother, never recovered from her murder. Sadly, he killed himself in 2013, siting Anita's murder as the cause of his pain and depression.

This family deserves answers for the suffering they have endured. Anita Knutson deserves justice and somebody needs to be held accountable for her murder and the pain it caused her loved ones.

Anita was a bright light in a dark room. She went out of her way to make everyone feel special and she deserves better than her case collecting dust on a shelf for over a decade. This is personal for me as she had been my best friend since kindergarten and I refuse to let her light go out.

I’m hoping I can gain access to her case files so that I might enlist the help of a professional outside source to review her case. I have reached out to the State’s Attorney for help in this endeavor, but have yet to hear back. If anyone reading this has experience in this matter, I would love to speak with you.

In general, I’m asking for any help. We are 14 years out and would appreciate literally any information whether you think It’s common knowledge or not.
