New Zealand - Female Counselor had sex with suicidal 16 year old girl

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/4101876a11.html

    SNIP ~

In March, 2000, Miss B went to see the high school guidance counsellor because she was having trouble with her mother at home. Their monthly sessions increased to weekly and, in November, Isaac referred her to a mental health service because of her drug use, self-harming, and violence.
In early April 2001, the girl was suspended from school for drug possession, but her suspension was lifted with the help of Isaac. During the next few months she was admitted to hospital three times – for acute alcohol intoxication, self-harm, and because she was suicidal. In May, she disclosed a history of sexual abuse and was referred to a specialist counsellor, bringing her formal relationship with Isaac to an end. After a drug overdose in August, she wrote a suicide note to Isaac, addressing her as "Aunty Janette". That prompted formal complaints from her mother and her mental health therapist about the pair's inappropriate relationship.

OMG this women was counceling children???

It just backs my theory that only those that are screwed up themselves become therapists.

Amraann: What theory. That all people who work in a school guidance counsellor position are screwed up based on one case in New Zealand. If you read the story, the child's mental health therapist was the person who along with the mother initiated the complaint. The child and the school guidance cousellor both need help. By the way, the girl was 16. In Canada the age of consent for any sexual activity is 16 as in New Zealand. In Canada also a child can legally move out of the house at 16. Legally. Remember different countries have different laws.

The child need "intensive mental health counselling and most likely meds.

CyberLaw, my mistake on the laws in Canada. At 16 a child can move out? Notice I say child? I was going to say "Hey, hey I'm a therapist". Alas, I am not, and would have been joking, but nothing funny about it. I hope that kid gets the help she needs. Thanks for that information as well.

A child on his or her sixteen birthday can legally move out of the house, runaway, get a job. We are so reminded by our 15 year old son, well almost every day. If a child runs away and decides to live on the street, LE cannot legally pick them up and bring them home. It would different if there were circumstances that the child `was endangered`.

I think in the US you would call it emancipated. The age of consent was just recently raised to 16 in Canada. It was 14 prior to that.

I fully hold the school counsellor responsible. She should have far better "decision" making abilities then a 16 year old girl who "had such severe" problem that she initiated self harm. I mean come on, she was in a position to help a `vulnerable` girl, not add to her problems. The school counsellor, took advantage of this girl, plain and simple, knowing that she has severe mental health issues.

Oh I love when the kids remind parents how long until the big legal birthday.I think we did it too, CyberLaw. Once again though someone in a position to help a vulnerable kid hurts them. Hopefully she's getting proper care now this poor girl.
