By Rocky Mountain News
July 2, 2007
A missing Grand Junction woman's car was found engulfed in flames last night, a television station reported this morning.

KJCT said police and fire departments responded to the blaze about 10 p.m. in northwest Grand Junction.

Colorado Bureau of Investigation agents are at the scene today, KJCT said.

Mesa County authorities have been looking for Paige Birgfeld, 34, who has been missing since Thursday.

Birgfeld was last seen wearing a blue-flowered tube top and blue jean shorts and riding in a red 2005 Ford Focus, Colorado license plate 022-OOX.

This is a friend of an online friend of mine.

The articles say that Paige got a call about 10pm Thursday night and left her kids with the live in nanny, then her car was found 3 days later burning, on Sunday night about 10pm.

Here's a bit of an update:

(AP) GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Investigators in Grand Junction are looking into whether Web site postings by a missing woman may have anything to do with her disappearance.

Paige Birgfeld, 34, has not been seen or heard from since Thursday.

The Daily Sentinel reported Birgfeld posted messages on chefsuccess.com indicating she feared the return of her ex-husband, Rob Dixon.

GRAND JUNCTION — A missing Mesa County mother whose car was found torched a few miles from her upscale home may have been working as a model or escort at the time of her disappearance, her father said today.
Frank Birgfeld now worries that one of his daughter's many entrepreneurial jobs may be at the root of her mysterious disappearance.

Birgfeld, of Centennial, said he saw a business card with his daughter's name on it indicating she was involved in modeling and possibly more.

"I did not know what that is," said Birgfeld, former vice president and district director of the National Association of Securities Dealers. "As a dad, I don't know that I like the sound of it. It is an area that is ripe for speculation."

His daughter also sold baby carriers, had a dance company called Brain Dance and was an independent sales director for The Pampered Chef, an Illinois-based company that allows people to sell kitchen gadgetry from their homes.

"I got a hunch this wasn't because she had an irate Pampered Chef customer," said Birgfeld, who was busy plastering the Grand Junction area with fliers Tuesday.

She was scared that her ex husband would find out she was back with her first husband....

Escort/modeling service....

Devoted mother who would not leave her children...

Several possibilities and none are good to think about.

Colorado authorities are baffled by the case of a missing mother of three and are investigating whether she may have staged her own disappearance.

Paige Birgfeld, 34, of Grand Junction, Colo., has not been seen or heard from since June 28. The Mesa County Sheriff's Department is still listing it as a missing persons case.

Mesa County sheriff's investigators are focusing on "some individuals" who had contact with a Grand Junction mother days before her disappearance, a spokeswoman said Thursday.

Paige Birgfeld, 34, has been missing since June 28.

A few days later, her car was found in flames in an empty parking lot less than 3 miles from her home.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Heather Gierhart would not identify the people they were focusing on or say what investigators are looking at.

Gierhart confirmed that investigators think Birgfeld, a mother of three, had been working for an escort service.

Well, I'm glad LE is getting focused on this odd disappearance. Sounds like she might have gotten into a bad situation through her work as an escort.

For most of last week, friends and family of a missing Grand Junction mother were surprised on an almost- daily basis as they learned the secrets she had been keeping.

Over the weekend, they found out one more: She went by another name.

Paige Birgfeld, 34, occasionally told people her name was "Carrie," police said, also announcing for the first time that they suspect she is the victim of foul play.

Birgfeld used the pseudonym with customers of an escort agency before she disappeared June 28, Mesa County sheriff's spokeswoman Heather Gier hart said.

The investigation is focusing on people who were in contact with "Carrie" and the agency, "Models Inc.," around the time she went missing, Gierhart said.

Birgfeld's involvement with the escort service was a surprise to friends and family last week.

"We didn't know any of this," her mother, Suzanne Birgfeld, said Sunday.

But, she said, the new information helps the search for her daughter, whose three children, ages 8, 6 and 3, are beginning to really miss her.

"We added the name 'Carrie' to some of the fliers we're handing out," she said, adding that she did not know where the name came from.

Gierhart said there are "potentially" other names Birgfeld used, but investigators have yet to confirm that.

Wow, she certainly led a mysterious, complicated life. That's too bad. It must be a real shock to everyone.

The details of the Birgfeld case are still emerging and it's too soon to know what drove her to allegedly work in the escort business.

But forensic psychologists say that people who lead dual lives are often driven by many of the same factors, including easy money, possible personality disorders and the thrill of illicit and sometimes dangerous activities.

"There's no one profile," said Gregg McCrary, a retired criminal profiler with the FBI. "It's usually a combination of things -- money, emotional needs, the need to have a secret life, the need to be risk taking."

That duality can lead to dangerous consequences. "If the secret life is more rewarding than the normal life, then you may get addicted to the secret life," said forensic psychologist Katherine Ramsland. "The two lives are going to clash one way or the other."

Experts who spoke with ABC News discussed some of the common factors that can lead otherwise average people to participate in illicit activity such as escort services. Those factors may or may not be in play in the Birgfeld case, and none of the experts was intimately familiar with the details of her case. Some forensic psychologists pointed to significant differences between running an escort service and some other types of secret activity, like an affair with a student.

Hundreds of volunteers are ready to start a search for Paige Birgfeld, the missing Grand Valley mother of three and adult dancer.

"We have tons of volunteers," said Connie Flukey, director of the Jennifer and Abby Recovery Center.

Birgfeld was last seen two weeks ago and was reported missing on June 30. The next day, her car was found on fire about two miles west of her home in north Grand Junction.

Investigators believe the torching of Paige Birgfeld's car three days after she vanished is connected with the disappearance of the mother of three young children, Mesa County Sheriff Stan Hilkey said Wednesday.

"It was arson, and the car burned from the inside out,'' Hilkey said. "From all the circumstances surrounding it, we believe it is tied to her disappearance.''

Birgfeld, 34, vanished June 28 and was reported missing two days later. The next evening her car was found burning in a parking lot about three miles from her upscale home.

While friends knew her as a devoted mother with several businesses, including selling products for the Pampered Chef, Birgfeld also worked as an escort through Models Inc., which she owned and promoted on the Internet. Her online alter-ego was Carrie, and investigators, who suspect foul play, hope her business holds the key to her fate.

Sounds like LE is closer to solving this disappearance. I hope they narrow it down to a single POI.

I wonder who it was that called Paige at 10:00? I hope LE could trace the phone call and maybe have a lead through the phone call. She must have left to meet someone...probably the caller or maybe one of her escort girls was having a problem. She didn't dress up to go though so it wasn't an escort date.

I can understand why she needed so many jobs and a large income....she lived in an upscale neighborhood...had three kids...and a nanny. I wonder if she received child support for her kids? Her car was fairly new and it sounds like she lived a life that probably cost quite a bit to maintain.

I wonder if she wasn't afraid that her ex-husband would find out about the escort service and be really angry because of the children. I can only imagine how shocked her family are about her lifestyle. I wonder what kind of modeling she did and if the escort business was more then just accompaning a male to some event or dinner. I'm sure LE will dig deeper and figure it all out. I wonder if she was dating anyone steadly?

Searchers Find Missing Woman's Checkbook Along Highway

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- The search for a Grand Junction woman who has been missing for two weeks intensified over the weekend as hundreds of volunteers set out in search of information in the case.

Searchers found 34-year-old Paige Birgfeld's checkbook and a series of checks along a two-mile stretch of a highway.

Searchers find belongings of missing woman
About 10 Sheriff’s deputies and 40 volunteers from the Abbey and Jennifer Recovery Foundation are participating in the search today, Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Heather Gierhart said.
“We’re searching the roadway — both sides of the road,” Hilkey said. “The items are limited to a short distance.”
He added: “Are other items in the area within the same distance?”
Searchers are trying to find items scattered along the highway outside of the two-mile stretch where some were discovered earlier Sunday.

Searchers find "personal items"
A series of checks, a check register and several personal items belonging to a woman missing for more than two weeks were found this morning scattered along the median of Highway 50 several miles from Grand Junction.
Frank Birgfeld, father of missing 34-year-old Paige Birgfeld, said he didn’t know what the other items were and was with a different group of searchers when the discovery was made.
"In terms of optimism, can it be?" Birgfeld asked. "Is this is the proverbial trail of bread crumbs left by Paige? You kind of like the sound of that as a dad." His daughter has been missing since the night of June 28. Her car was found burning in a gravel parking lot of an auto parts distribution warehouse July 1 and the investigation into her disappearance has revealed much about her life — including her juggling several jobs ranging from Pampered Chef salesperson to running an independent escort service.

GRAND JUNCTION – The father of a missing woman says searchers have found some of his daughter's personal items, including a series of checks he believes could be a trail left behind on purpose.

The searchers were looking for clues in the disappearance of Paige Birgfeld, a woman who has been missing for more than two weeks.

Frank Birgfeld, Paige's father, tells MSNBC that searchers found his daughter's checkbook and a series of her checks, along Highway 50 near Lands End Road, sound of Grand Junction.

The area is about 10 miles from where her burnt-out car was found on July 1.

Searchers tell 9NEWS they also found Paige's Blockbuster card and a couple of health cards.

"It kind of spurs you on. You never know what you're going to find," one searcher said.

"It's very important," said Mesa County Sheriff Stan Hikey. "It's a piece of the puzzle. We have talked about this before. You never know which piece of the puzzle is going to cause other pieces to fall together and give you some great progress."

Wow, I don't know what to think about her things being scattered along the road. Either her dad is right and she got the chance to toss items out the window without being seen or her abductor just tossed them out as he drove along the road. It isn't looking good because of the amount of time that she has been missing though. I wonder if they know who she got the phone call from that night around 10:00 pm. They must know as they can check phone records of incoming calls can't they? Is there a way to find out who called in?

I wonder if the 2nd husband knew that Paige was seeing her 1st husband? Do both husbands have air tight alibis for that night? In her profession it could be just about anyone that abducted her but she must have went out to meet her abductor so would it have been a client? Lots of questions and no answers.

Not that she deserved this in any way, but, GOSH, she certainly was living a lifestyle that puts you at high risk for foul play. What is wrong with these people??
