Investigators are now suspicious that foul play may be the cause behind a Craig woman’s disappearance, the Police Department reported Monday morning.

“There has been no known contact with Cynthia Hankins/Runnels since June 3,” police reported in a press release. “Her disappearance is very suspicious in nature and she may be the victim of a crime.”

Hankins, 36, a former Craig Motel employee, was last seen June 7 in Craig. Police asked for the public’s help in late June in locating Hankins, who was last seen with an unknown male.

Following the distribution of a missing person’s flyer, investigators developed several leads from contacts in Montana, Wyoming and New Mexico. No new information on Hankins’ whereabouts was developed from the leads.

However, police are reporting that the victim’s husband, Terry Hankins, is a “person of interest in this investigation.”

SNIPPET=================:( :(

The execution of a search warrant Monday in Carbon County, Wyo., failed to uncover any new evidence or information into a Craig woman’s disappearance, Craig Police Chief Walt Vanatta said Tuesday morning.
Cynthia Hankins, also known as Cynthia Runnels, was last seen June 7 in Craig.
The search warrant — the third executed since Saturday — took place at a mining claim operated by the missing woman’s husband, Terry Hankins, in the Encampment area of Carbon County.
Investigators have deemed Terry Hankins a “person of interest” in the case.
Vanatta said police are not yet ready .................con't

A 70-year-old mining prospector has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of his wife, who he allegedly buried near one of his mines.

Investigators from a multi-jurisdictional task force on Saturday recovered the body of Cynthia Hankins-Runnels, 36, after six hours of digging at a site 33 miles north of Craig in Moffat County.

The task force consisted of officers from the Craig Police Department, the Moffat County Sheriff's Department, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Land Management and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

Arrested was Terrence Joe Hankins, 70, who was living at and operating a mining claim at the remote location, according to Craig Police Chief Walter Vanatta.

According to Vanatta, Hankins was being investigated for a variety of criminal activities when information developed that related to the disappearance of his wife. She had been missing since June 3.

"Utilizing heavy equipment and hand tools, it took investigators over six hours to exhume the burial site," police said in a written statement. The body was found in a grave about five feet deep and covered with a pile of dirt about 12 feet wide and six feet wide.

What the heck did she see in him?! She was so young... (Sorry, no offense to anyone.)

RIP, Cynthia.

Money would be my guess. He operates the gold mine where she was found.

From August 2009:

http://www.steamboattoday.com/news/2009/aug/27/hankins_sentenced_life_without_parole_murder/

[A] jury of 10 men and two women found him guilty of first-degree murder, a Class 1 felony, and abuse of a corpse, a Class 2 misdemeanor, in connection with the June 2007 death of his wife, Cynthia...

O'Hara sentenced Hankins to life in prison without parole, adding that he had no discretion in his decision. First-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence in Colorado.

According to three recorded confessions Hankins made to law enforcement, he choked his wife unconscious, hit her in the face with a crow bar and then smothered her with a pillow. Hankins said he cut Cynthia's body into pieces and buried her remains on his gold claim north of Craig, where they were eventually unearthed by law enforcement.
