Heinz Barth, former ss officer dies

Too easily if you ask me

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070814/..._eu/obit_barth

On June 10, 1944, as they headed toward Normandy to combat D-Day invasion forces who landed four days earlier, German troops of the armored SS Division "Das Reich" slaughtered 642 men, women and children in the village.

The Germans rounded up the village men, forced them into barns and machine-gunned them. The 241 women and 209 children were herded into the church, which was set afire with grenades and then shot at with machine guns.

In addition to involvement in the massacre, East German judges also found that Barth volunteered to participate in an execution of 92 Czech civilians in 1942

Barth lived under a false name in communist East Germany, working as a decorator in Gransee and running a grocery store, until his identity emerged in 1981 and he was imprisoned.

In 1997, a state court freed Barth on health grounds, commuting his sentence to probation. Barth, who lost a leg in the war, suffered from diabetes, high blood pressure and other ailments.

"I feel guilty about the terrible crimes in Oradour," Barth was quoted as telling the Berlin tabloid B.Z. at the time of his release. "But I have paid long enough."

NOT near long enough for me I'm so sick of these sickos not being held responsible for what they did! Here he died at home at the ripe age of 86 and he killed hundreds of innocent people.

    No loss.

Hopefully, he's burning in Hell. I'm pretty sure he is.

I'm sure he is burning also, I'm glad he saw a little prison time since many don't at all. It amazes me how much compassion they showed him when he showed that to no one else. He should have been before a judge in a jewish community, I would have liked to see the sentence they would have given him.

i'm sure everyone is going to hate me for saying this, but one day, we in the future, we will be reading articles like this about our own soldiers, who say they were just following orders.

a select few sicko's are out there in iraq engaging in war crimes , and will not be held accountable except by the court of history, and that accountability will amount to naught, as in this case.

    sad to say, but true.

abu graib is the tip of the iceberg, and its a big one. it will take a LONG time for america to be regarded as the liberating war hero again. possibly 50 years or more.
    yikes.

You know what....if you were standing in front of me and a man.....I'd knock your teeth out for comparing our sollders to Nazi's.

You make me SICK. You need to go read some history and learn what the hell you are talking about before you besmearch the good name of our soldiers who serve honorably and honestly and do an outstanding job by comparing them to a bunch of murderous nazis.

    You make me sick.

the fact you feel that way is so sad. both sides may different views but most reasonable people can agree we are not Nazi's. it is a shame that you feel we are as evil as those who gassed 6 million Jews.

The HUGE difference being that Nazi's killed for no great purpose ...
There was no threat to their well being or that of their families.

They killed simply because they wanted a nation of blondes with blue eyes.
The Jewish people did not hijack planes and kill innocent people.
The Nazi's were not defending themselves they killed thousands simply for sport.
Our own soldiers fight to keep us safe not to cause the extinction of a race simply because they do not like their skin tone or eye color.

We did not make these rules .... We did not seek war. Should we simply let the terrorists rule the world?? I am sure Osama would be a great president!!

It is to compare apples and the small pits in an olive to compare American troops to Nazi's.

I think that lightwaveryder should be required to go see the Holocaust Museum in DC and actually get educated about what they hell she is talking about.

    Anyone been there?

They have an actual cattle car used to transport Jews to camps via the railroads. It was smaller than I imagined and with only a few people in there, I was claustrophobic. Yet, they told how many hundreds were in that car...they had to be stacked on top of each other....that many people couldn't stand up in that space. They have concrete boxes around the tv monitors on the top level so that only adults can see the TV's which run continuously showing footage of what was found in the graves and when the Allies went into those camps. On the way out, there are huge bins probably 30-50 feet long, 5 feet high, and 6 feet deep on each side of you that house personal effects of victims....shoes, glasses, umbrellas, etc. From the tinyest shoes to the largest. Very very sad when you grasp the enormity of what happened to these people.

And then you have someone come and compare our brave soldiers to nazis. My non-friend, you need to get some education.

While at it ... you may wish to visit the site of the World Trade Centers.

In this comparison the terrorists are the equal to the Nazi's NOT the US troops.

Oh, good. 'Cause that's entirely different than what the Nazis used to do.

Sometimes it isn't enough to read history; you have to actually think about what you are reading.

If I understand lightwaveryder's point, it isn't that most or even many American servicemen and women are committing war crimes. His/her point is that while we are expressing indignation at terrible crimes committed 60 years ago, we ought to look at what is going on right now.

It's a good point and one that in no way justifies the crimes of the past.

I would go further and say that whenever one attempts to tyrannize an entire population (whether that of your own country or another), even when you claim to be doing so for the conquered people's "own good," atrocities are inevitable.

lightwaveryder is only saying let's learn from the past.

Oh, come on! Most Germans were convinced that exterminating Jews WAS essential to their national well-being. Crazy and evil notion? Yes. Were they sold a bill of goods by calculating leaders? Yes. Should this remind us of recent events? Also, sadly, yes.

How less crazy are the ideas of so many Americans who were--and apparently still are--convinced we should bombard and kill Iraqis WHO HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE 9/11 DISASTER!?

The historical lesson is that ruthless leaders can still use fear to manipulate their people despite all evidence that exists to contradict the official propaganda.
