CA - Sex offender accused of molesting boy

A registered sex offender convicted in 1984 for sexually abusing a child has been arrested again for allegedly molesting another child -- a 10-year-old boy, Atwater Police said.
Atwater Police arrested 61-year-old Jesus Gonzalez-Castellanos Wednesday at his home on the 500 block of Cedar Avenue after the boy's father allegedly saw the suspect watching pornographic films with his son.
Det. Armando Echevarria said the boy's father had come to pick him up from Gonzalez-Castellanos' house and looked through a window, where he saw Gonzalez-Castellanos showing his son the pornographic materials. Echevarria said the father confronted Gonzalez-Castellanos, who said the film had been played accidentally.
The father became suspicious and called police, who conducted a search of the suspect's home. Det. Adolfo Lomeli investigated, and after interviews with the boy, Gonzalez-Castellanos was arrested. He was booked on felony charges of lewd and lascivious acts with a minor, sodomy, continuous abuse of a minor and displaying harmful content with intent to seduce a minor, Echevarria said.
Gonzalez-Castellanos is being held at the John Latorraca Correctional Facility in lieu of $440,000 bail. "Obviously, any crime against a child we take very seriously. Especially something like this that is traumatic in nature, not only for the child but family that is involved," Echevarria said.
Officers also discovered evidence of the crime inside of Gonzalez-Castellanos' home, although Echevarria would not disclose what the evidence was.
Gonzalez-Castellanos had served time in prison for a similar crime 23 years ago, on charges of sodomy with a person under 14 years of age with force.
Gonzalez-Castellanos knew the Atwater boy because he had apparently become acquainted with the parents and was able to gain their trust -- so much so that they allowed him to spend time with their son alone on several occasions, Echevarria said.
The boy's parents did not suspect that Gonzalez-Castellanos' desire to be around the boy was unusual, nor did they know Gonzalez-Castellanos was a registered sex offender -- even though he is listed on the Attorney General's Megan's Law Web site.

WTF were these people doing allowing their son to spend time alone with any individual whom they did not run through the SO registry? I DON"T let my girls go to anybody's house without checking the status of all of the occupants first. I have been blessed with three of the most precious gifts in this world, and I'll be damned if I'll take my job as a parent lightly! This is my most important role in this lifetime...to protect and love my children.

Even if they didn't know he was a registered sex offender, they should have been suspicious of an adult male wanting to spend so much time alone with their child. That should have been a huge red flag!

Agreed Deb. But the fact that they admitted they never ran him through the registry at all really chaps my hide!

This is why all sex offenders of children should have signs in their yards and have it branded on their forheads!!

I don't understand why they didn't check but I have to say that it chaps my hide that these molesters are ever let out of prison to be put on a registry.

And I agree with that 100%. The are never going to be rehabilitated, so just give them the freaking ax now!

Amen to everything above. I wish we were in charge of sex offenders.

There is only family that my children are allowed to have sleepovers with. We know them well and they know us well. They are indeed like family to us!

There are just too many other families where brothers, male friends of brothers, uncles etc (and women relatives too) are in the home and I don't even know their names.

Besides that, I'm thinking chances are there are more perverts OFF the list (not on it yet) than there are on the list. I'm not taking any chances with my kids.

Why didn't these parents feel this was strange? I always think I'm too paranoid, but it's cases like this one that keep me paranoid.

When are parents going to figure out that they can't let their child hang around adults that they don't really know? I mean, that is common sense.
