Police are continuing the search for a 64-year-old Manchester man who is missing and may be in need of medication.
Police are asking the public's assistance in finding William Schmidbauer of the Cedar Glen West section, which is a senior community, Sgt. Anthony Cucchiara said. Schmidbauer is a Vietnam veteran, police said.
Schmidbauer's wife last saw him about 11:30 p.m. Saturday when she fell asleep, Cucchiara said. She believes that he was home early Sunday before she awoke because the morning paper had been brought inside their home, he said.
Schmidbauer was still missing at 4:30 p.m. Monday, and the Ocean County Black Sheep Squadron, a volunteer air patrol based at Miller Air Park in Berkeley, had joined the search Monday morning, police said.
He left home without essential medications, Cucchiara said.
Schmidbauer is described as a white male, about 6 feet 1 inch, 170 pounds with short brownish-gray hair and hazel eyes. He is believed to be wearing blue shorts, a brown T-shirt and black sandals. He has a 4-inch scar on his right thigh.
Police are asking that anyone with information about his whereabouts contact them at (732) 657-6111.

Police have received multiple tips about a missing man, William Schmidbauer, who vanished from his Cedar Glen West development on Sept. 24.

Schmidbauer is a Vietnam veteran and is described as a white male, about 6-foot-1, 170 pounds with short, brownish-gray hair and hazel eyes.

...police would be searching that wooded area off Route 70 near the Ocean County Landfill where a woman had said she saw a person who looked like Schmidbauer on Sept. 25, the Tuesday after he disappeared. The area he was believed to have been seen in was on Route 70 between the intersection of Green Acres Road and Christ Lutheran Church.

The place he was last seen was about three miles from his house.
Family members and volunteers have posted fliers and handed out pictures, knocked on doors, and canvassed the woods.

The Citizens Emergency Response Team of about 40 volunteers from Toms River, Manchester and Lakehurst combed the woods again on Saturday...

William Schmidbauer served his country in the jungles of Vietnam, where he was wounded by shrapnel in a tank explosion.

The memories of combat continued for a long time afterward. More than a quarter of a century after he retired from a 20-year military career, Schmidbauer battled depression and seemed obsessed with the welfare of U.S. soldiers fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Then, one day in 2007, he would tell a neighbor he wanted to "end it all.'' Two days later, he vanished. There was no note and no body. There were no signs of suicide, homicide or misadventure. Whatever happened, Schmidbauer didn't leave a trace.

His wife passed away earlier this year, but his children are still looking for him.

William Schmidbauer has been missing for eight years now.

"Search continues for N.J. veteran missing for 8 years"

Nearly eight years after a U.S. Army veteran went missing from his Manchester home, police say their investigation into the disappearance is ongoing.

On Sept. 23, 2007, 64-year-old William Schmidbauer – a retired 20-year veteran of the U.S. Army – vanished from his Cedar Glen West home without his medications, COPD inhaler, vehicle and keys, clothes, and money. He left no note before leaving home and investigators have found nothing suspicious about his disappearance, police said.

MANCHESTER — Eleven years after 64-year-old William Schmidbauer went missing, police say they have found his remains.

The discovery was made Tuesday by an engineering crew working in a wooded area along the Ridgeway Branch off Ridgeway Boulevard.

The find brings to an end a missing-persons case that had bedeviled investigators who never gave up the search for the Vietnam veteran.

The workers on Tuesday called police after coming across a human skull. Investigators then found further skeletal remains and eventually discovered a pocket knife, a wrist watch and a wallet with identification.

Investigators say the bones had been exposed to weather and environment for an extended period of time.

Although authorities don’t know how Schmidbauer ended up in the woods, police on Wednesday said “it does not appear as though foul play was involved.” A forensic anthropologist with the State Police will examine the remains.

RIP William. Although I am thankful his remains have finally been found, it saddens me that he was so close to where he lived. I mapped the Cedar Glen West Development (just picked a random street in the development) to a random wooded spot on Ridgeway Blvd, Manchester, NJ.
