This is so sad. They said these guards were lifelong friends. And now Philly is in fear as the man is on the run.

So sad. I saw the police chief (?) on TV yesterday and he had tears in his eyes.

Possible Break In Deadly Phila. ATM Robbery Case

(CBS3) PHILADELPHIA CBS 3 has learned Philadelphia police have located a person of interest and a possible get away car believed to have been involved in Thursday's deadly armed robbery at an ATM. The robbery left two retired police officers, working as armored car guards, dead.

Sources tell CBS 3 a black vehicle, matching the same description of the car used by the fleeing suspect, was located at about 11 a.m. Friday in the 3000 block of N. Mascher Street in the city's Kensington section.

Sources also tell CBS 3 a potential person of interest is being interviewed by detectives.

Man Charged in Phila. ATM Killings

By MARYCLAIRE DALE – 3 hours ago
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A convicted bank robber charged with killing two armored car guards had spotted the vehicle on the road and followed it to an ATM, where he shot them as the serviced the cash machine, a homicide detective said Saturday.
Mustafa Ali, 36, of Philadelphia, executed the two retired Philadelphia police officers without saying a word, police have said.
"He follows the truck, he sees an opportunity and he takes it," said the detective, who worked on the case but requested anonymity because he is not a supervisor and is not authorized to comment publicly.
Ali owned the dark Acura used in the heist, although the FBI had not been able to glean the license plate number from the surveillance film, the detective said. Ali instead became a suspect based on tips called in from the public.
Commissioner Sylvester Johnson, whose department has struggled to solve murder cases amid a 'stop snitching' culture among criminals and witnesses, thanked the public for stepping up in this case.
"Within an hour, we started getting information from citizens," Johnson said at a news conference Saturday afternoon. "(Ali) will never walk the streets, hopefully, again in his lifetime." (more at link)

I'm glad they have a suspect. Prayers for the families of these two men.

ahhh, my lovely city.

Such a shame.

We have the highest murder rate, just behind Camden (across the river) as having the highest murder rate in the country. Such a shame, for such an amazing city.

Crime
There were an average of about 400 murders a year for most of the 1990s. The murder count dropped in 2002 to 288, then surged four years later to 406.[43] Out of the ten most populous cities in the United States in 2006, Philadelphia had the highest homicide rate at 28 per 100,000 people, and is on pace for a significantly worse year in 2007.[44]
In 2004, there were 5,513.5 crimes per 100,000 people in Philadelphia.[45] In 2005, Philadelphia was ranked by Morgan Quitno as the sixth-most dangerous among 32 American cities with populations over 500,000. Among its neighboring Mid-Atlantic cities in the same population group, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. were ranked second- and third-most dangerous cities in the United States, respectively, and Camden, New Jersey across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, was ranked as the most dangerous city in the United States.[46]
Recently, statistics released in 2006 named Camden the fifth-most dangerous city in the country, representing a minor improvement from its 2004 ranking. Philadelphia now ranked 29th.[47]
On September 12, 2007, police commissioner Sylvester Johnson called on 10,000 African American men to patrol the streets to lessen crime. Johnson, who is black himself, set up the program as a means of countering the city's disproportionate homicide rate of African Americans. Dennis Muhammad, Nation of Islam official and Mayor John F. Street, supported the project. The city has hit 300 homicides this year, of which 80% of the victims were African American. The "Call to Action: 10,000 Men, It's a New Day" program is to be initiated on October 21, 2007.[48]

Mustafa Ali spared the death penalty...sentenced to two terms of life without parole, to be served consecutively...shows no emotion (of course).

My heart broke for the families of these fallen men. Retired police officers.

Mustafa Ali's hard knock life growing up came into play of course.

Man, Sylvester Johnson was Commish when this happened. Now we're torchering another poor soul as Commish.
