Two bodies were discovered at about 7:20 a.m. Tuesday along a rural road in North Tulsa. News On 6 anchor Craig Day reports a driver on 56th Street North just east of U.S. Highway 75, saw a tarp on the side of the road, he stopped to pick it up and found the bodies.

Victim number one is described as a white female, 5’4”, 175 pounds, she is 25 to 30 years old, wearing a black hoodie and a black flowered skirt, her toenails are painted burgundy.

The second victim is also a white female, 5’4”, 170 pounds, brown hair, in her forties. She is wearing a black skirt and a black spaghetti strap shirt. She has a barbed wire tattoo on her right ankle, a tattoo with the name Nicholas on the outside of her left thigh and another tattoo with the name Zachary on the inside of her right ankle, just above a rose tattoo. She is also wearing a butterfly ring on her right ring finger. The ring has pink stones.

I wonder if these two women could be related since they are both so similar in weight and height.

It is certainly possible. There are similarities.

I would hate to presume instantly they are from this area, but our most concentrated area of crime is the north side. Gangs literally run the entire area in and around where they found the bodies.

Early on Tuesday someone found two women tied up and wrapped in a tarp by the road in Tulsa, OK.

Neither woman had any i.d. The cause of death for both women wasn't readily apparent. They were both white women, both 5'4", both weighed between 170 and 175 lbs.

The younger, slightly heavier woman may have been in her late 20s/early 30s. She wore a black hoodie, black, flower-patterned skirt, and wine-colored polish on her toenails. The other woman was probably in her 40s. She was a brunette and was also clad mostly in black.

The second, older woman had a distinctive barbed-wire tattoo wrapping her right ankle. Another tattoo on her left leg read "Nicholas." An additional tattoo on her right ankle showed a rose and above that the name "Zachary." This woman wore a "butterfly ring" studded with pink stones on her right-hand ring finger.

Further details about this real-life mystery can be found if you follow the link in the first sentence of this post (this thread-starter is just a summary of info in that piece) or this link:

I'll be keeping an eye on this story and will write about it at The True Crime Weblog if enough information is available.

Tulsa police have identified the women as 29-year-old Angela Basset and 36-year-old Angela Hardgrove.

The bodies of two women were found partially clothed and wrapped inside the tarp. Police believe the women were likely killed somewhere else and then dumped along the road a short time before they were discovered.

"We had preliminary information that somebody drove along here that works at the dumpsite here, that didn't see the bodies at 7 o'clock, and then at 7:20, they were discovered by another worker," Palmer said.

The two victims, Angela Basset and Angela Hardgrove, were bound, but police aren't releasing their exact cause of death.

Thanks, SS. I didn't check that section because this was obviously a crime, to me -- I can't think of a non-criminal way two women end up bound and wrapped in a tarp. I tend to section off things in my head, and sometimes John and Jane Doe cases are not put in the crime section because people arrive at their destinations in a wide variety of ways.

Weird. Their descriptions seemed similar and they both had the same first name. Does this smell potentially very strange to anyone else?

That link takes you to the court records for an Angela Bassett in Tulsa -- note the two "T's" at the end of her name, like the African American actress.

May not be her. If it is, though, it's interesting that she has a record but also there are other records of her possibly having been abused.

Steve

EDITED TO ADD: I gotta believe the news outlets there in Tulsa may be screwing up the spelling of these womens' names. That happens so often it's just ridiculous. Did a full search on OK courts for Angela Hargrove (no "d") and got this:

http://tinyurl.com/33zhau

Most hits of any court reporting to OK's state docket query system.

I wonder if both women may have used slightly altered spellings of their names as aliases, though.

One caveat, though -- this Angela Hargrove is a white woman age 36, but she is supposedly 5'10". So may not be her, after all.

This Angela Bassett, however, fits the age, height, etc.

If this is the same person, which I think it is because of her birthdate of 1977, Angela Bassett has a criminal past. Her last convictions were for concealing stolen property and 2 counts of unauthororized use of stolen credit cards. Other charges over the years involved drugs and writing fake scripts.

I haven't found anything on the Hardgrove woman.

BREAKING NEWS: Person Of Interest In Police Custody

A man is taken into custody for questioning following the deaths of two women.
~snip~
detectives executed search warrants at the homes of the victims where they came across the name of a person of interest.

Investigators obtained a search warrant for that man’s residence and when they went to serve it, the person of interest and another woman took off in a semi tractor and led police on a four mile pursuit.

The chase ended near 116th Street North and 97th East Avenue, where the person of interest was taken into police custody for questioning. Investigators are now reportedly searching his home.

I have to admit this is excellent police work! They have a POI in custody in less than a day! WTG!

Steve, you may be able to add this one to your "Southern Gothic" file (if you consider Oklahoma to be "Southern"). Apparently, a search of the homes of the victims resulted in a name that quickly became a person of interest.

"Investigators obtained a search warrant for that man’s residence and when they went to serve it, the person of interest and another woman took off in a semi tractor and led police on a four mile pursuit."

A "semi tractor"??? Someone expected to evade LE in a semi-tractor? I made a comment to a coworker just the other day about how thankful I was for the stupidity of most criminals. No word on the connection to these women, or his identity yet, but I think this one will be very interesting.

UPDATE: Person Of Interest In Police Custody

Tulsa police say items found during a search of the victims' home, led them to the man in this case. It appears Angela Bassett and her friend, Angela Hardgrove, were asphyxiated.

Tulsa County Sheriff’s deputies thought they remembered another case of a woman's body that had been strangled, being found a few years ago in the same general area. They say they'll be researching that on Wednesday.

ETA: Media mispelled both women's names. Angela Bassett and Angela Hargrove are corrected versions.

I have searched through all of TPD's cold cases and done several online searches, but have found nothing on the prior case they mentioned.

Yep, now this story has gotten weirder. Knew it was coming:

http://www.kotv.com/news/topstory/?id=138521

The people who were questioned in association with the murders of Ms. Bassett and Ms. Hargrove are not persons of interest.

The women were apparently asphyxiated. Some crimes just strike me as truly odd, unique, and this is one.

Here's one weird aspect -- police figured out that the women had only been laying by the road wrapped in that tarp for maybe 20 minutes when they were found. Someone who passed by at 7 a.m. then at 7:20 said the tarp wasn't there on the first pass.

I also heard on the news last night that this was similar to another body found in the same general area a few years ago. Anyone remember anything?

Two people questioned in a double homicide are no longer considered persons of interest. Tulsa police say items found during a search of the victims' home, led them to a man. Detectives searched his home Tuesday night and again Wednesday morning. Police were able to determine that he did have contact with one of the victims, but detectives now say he is no longer a person of interest in the case.

Back to square one! I am glad they could rule him out so quickly...so they didn't waste a lot of time.

Story on 6 o'clock local news: Angela Bassett was married (maybe common law?) to James White and a mother of 3 children. She, James and Angela Hargrove were at a bar the night before her body was found. James said that she was inebriated and needed to go home. Bystanders mistook their conversation as arguing, the police were called, and James was taken to jail on outstanding warrants. That is the last time he saw her.

So, this was before 7 AM in the morning?
