    GA - Kyle Clinkscales, 23, LaGrange, 27 Jan 1976

Nearly 30 years ago, Kyle Clinkscales, a 22-year-old Auburn University business major from LaGrange, left his part-time bartending job at the LaGrange Moose Club to return to his campus apartment 42 miles away in Alabama.

    He never made it.

The young man vanished on Jan. 27, 1976, seemingly into thin air. His white '74 Ford Pinto was never found. Neither was Clinkscales' body.

But a fresh tip from a man who was a child at the time of Clinkscales' disappearance led to an arrest Wednesday.

Last month, Kyle Clinkscales' parents, John and Louise Clinkscales, received a telephone call from a man who said that as a 7-year-old he witnessed the disposal of their son's body. The caller said he was with his grandfather when he saw the body, covered with concrete in a barrel, dumped into a pond.

Although a search of the pond in recent weeks failed to turn up a body or barrel, authorities have arrested a man they say is connected to the long-ago disappearance

Troup County Sheriff Donny Turner said deputies arrested Jimmy Earl Jones, 63, an employee with the Heard County road department, before dawn Wednesday at a convenience store where Jones stops every day.

Jones, who is being held without bond in the Troup County Jail, is charged with concealing a death, hindering the apprehension of a criminal and two counts of making false statements. Jones was not charged with murder.

"We're in the middle of getting some good statements. [Jones is] in the middle of cooperating. We've got a lot of stuff to sift through," Turner said.

The sheriff said investigators believe Ray Hyde, who died in July 2001, "is the one that did the killing."

The caller said he and his grandfather were threatened that "if they opened their mouths, they'd be murdered too, and [the caller] had to live with that for 29 years," she said

Authorities drained the one-acre pond, about two miles from Hyde's property, "and there was a 3-foot dip. We dug there and couldn't find anything," the sheriff said.

Based on other information, the sheriff said, authorities believe Hyde later moved the body from the lake and buried it elsewhere. "There's a good chance the hole we found in the lake is where [the body] was. Jimmy Jones may not know where it was moved, but we're not quitting yet," Turner said.

Just when I think that I have seen the most depraved things a human can do to another human, somebody posts a new story...........

Why is it that when a custodial parent fails to provide for a child it is called neglect and is a criminal matter. But when a non custodial parent fails to provide it is called failure to support and is a civil matter?

It just shows that you should never give up hope. Many a murder story has been told as a deathbed confession.

    Second Arrest in 30-year-old Case

    Second Arrest in 30-year-old Case

    Last Modified: 6/27/2005 10:24:57 PM

LaGRANGE, Ga. (AP) -- A second arrest has been made in the disappearance almost 30 years ago of an Auburn University student who is believed to have been killed but whose body was never found.

Jeanne Pawlak Johnson, 57, was charged with concealment of a death, giving false statements and obstruction in the case of Kyle Clinkscales of LaGrange, Troup County Sheriff Donny Turner said Monday.

Jimmy Earl Jones, 61, was arrested in April and charged with helping to conceal a body after a local man claimed he saw Jones and another man dump the body in a pond. The other man died in 2001.

Clinkscales, 22, disappeared on Jan. 27, 1976 after finishing his shift as a part-time bartender at the Moose Club in LaGrange. He was supposed make the 35-mile drive back to Auburn, but he and his car were never found.

At the time of Jones’ arrest, the sheriff said he confessed to being at the home of auto salvage owner Ray Hyde the night the student disappeared but did not admit to killing Clinkscales.

Turner said Monday that according to information his investigators had received, Johnson also was at Hyde’s that night. Johnson denied being at the home and any knowledge of the killing, the sheriff said....

Kyle's father wrote a book about his disappearance called Kyle's Story: Friday Never Came. Copies are difficult to find, but I was able to get one. He said he thought Kyle had left of his own accord, but this was before all the stuff about the confession and stuff came out.

Before you decide I have lost my mind...

A few tips on Kyle were called in to me as a result of the flyer that has been circulating the last week or so. I did some research, made some phone calls and talked to Sheriff Nixon of Troup County...he is responsible for the case.

Kyle Clinkscales is presumed dead due to the recovered memory of someone who believes they saw him buried. Although the pond was drained where the tipster believes Kyle was dumped, all that was found was a depression.

Where things get a little crazy:
    • A skiptrace of Kyle C's ssn shows it being used up until 2001, last in PA.
    • Kyle's SSN still shows as active although his parents told a source that they had declared him dead.
    • There was no physical evidence indicating he was deceased.
Sheriff Nixon is open minded enough to request that Kyle C's MtDNA sample, currently being held at the GBI Crime Lab, be compared to Benjaman Kyle's MtDNA sample.

I will keep you all in the loop as I am informed...

Well, glad you explained that. LOL. I was beginning to think you had just picked someone at random and decided, we'll just try and see if he's a match.

Me either, friend. I submitted it based on the LE request, so I wanted to loop all of you in. Kyle has come up a few times over the years, but with the conviction of the person who apparently confessed to disposing his body, I figured it was safely set aside. I admire that the Sheriff is willing to leave no stone unturned for the Clinkscales who are still alive....

Okay folks, this is where it gets really weird:

    http://news.google.com/newspapers?id...-moore+amnesia

    http://news.google.com/newspapers?ni...&pg=4263,79174

Briefly, it appears that in 1981 a man named Danny Walter Moore telephoned Kyle Clinkscales' parents, using Kyle's name, and later wrote to them with similar handwriting. He claimed to have memories of having been in the Clinkscales' home and of being in Georgia, although he was living in Oregon. His parents ultimately appear to have decided that it was't him although dental records may have been compared as a rule out.

Apparently he thought he looked like Clinkscales but DNA obviously wasn't available back then to give a definitive answer. There doesn't seem to have been any follow up on Moore who (oddly) claims to have assumed the identity of his boss's deceased son. I wonder if "Moore" could have been the person who used KWC's SSN until 2001 or could be Benjaman, having suffered a relapse in 2004. Heck, I guess both are possible but unlikely. It might also explain the interest of LE for Clinkscales' case in Benjaman if we have kind of been here before.

Finally it appears that KWC's father died in 2007 but his mother appears still to be with us so we need to be quite careful with regard to this family's hopes.

We are staying far from the family, Cymro because of the story you posted but thank you for reminding all of us sleuthers why we have to sleuth before we drag family into our "discoveries." I think that is a good point you raised-that Moore may have been using Kyle's ssn.

What in incredible twist it would be if Moore and Bk were the same person...
