    November 19, 2007

A man died and another was seriously injured after a shooting early Sunday in southern Travis County.

One of the victims called authorities to a house in the 10400 block of Margra Lane about 2:45 a.m. Billy Gene Ferguson, 28, of Austin died in the attack. His mother, Patricia Ann Smith, 51, is missing and might be in danger, sheriff's spokesman Roger Wade said.

    and

Evidence shows that numerous shots were fired inside the house, Wade said. Several shells from a firearm were found inside, he said, but it wasn't clear whether they were related to the incident.

"The house was a mess, so (investigators) were evaluating everything to find out what went where," Wade said.

Deputies said they believe Albert Jesse Segura shot Billy Gene Ferguson four times at the house. They also said he shot Mario Rivera two times.

Rivera, 33, was taken to Brackenridge Hospital, where he remains in serious condition.

    and

Ferguson, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene and was the son of Patricia Ann Smith, who lived at the house.

"We think she's a potential witness, and we're quite worried what her status is right now," said Roger Wade of the sheriff's office.

A neighbor said the 51-year-old woman may also go by the name "Maria Morgan." Deputies could not confirm that information, though.

"There's a bunch of cars in and out all the time," said neighbor Misti Cauthen. "We're just wondering if they're dealing drugs out of the house."

Neighbors said Smith had lost a lot of weight recently, and there was a lot of traffic to and from the house. They said the shooting may have been drug related, but the sheriff's office could not confirm that.

A Travis County jury Thursday sentenced Albert Segura to life in prison without parole.

Segura, 37, was convicted of captal murder on Monday in the deadly shootings of two people in November 2007.

Billy Ferguson, 28, was shot in a house in Travis County. Prosecutors say Ferguson's mother Patricia Smith, 51, witnessed her son's killing. She was kidnapped, taken to a field in San Marcos and shot.
