DETROIT - A federal appeals court has ruled against a Detroit-area man who was convicted of killing his wife and dismembering the body.

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Tara Grant was a loving mother, a successful businesswoman and the victim of a crime carried out by her own husband.

It's been 10 years since Grant's death, and Local 4 took a look back at the disturbing case that captured Metro Detroit's attention.

Grant's family said they recognized warning signs in their daughter's marriage, but Stephen Grant made his move before she could be saved. They hope others who are in potentially dangerous situations can get the help they need.

Grant appeared to have it all. She was the mother of two children, had a successful career and was married to Stephen Grant. What many people didn't know was that Grant was living a nightmare at home, being verbally abused and manipulated by her husband.

Stephen Grant reported his wife missing Feb. 14, 2007. Weeks later, during a police search of the Grants' home, Tara Grant's torso was found inside the family's Washington Township garage (garage pictured below)...

Tara Grant's legacy lives 10 years after brutal murder

Sterling Heights — Ten years after her brutal murder, Tara Grant is leaving behind a legacy through her children and a story that inspires hundreds of domestic violence victims.

Tara Grant's case is still as relevant as it was a decade ago. The 34-year-old was killed by her husband in their Washington Township home in February 2007.

After their mother’s murder and father’s conviction, their two children — Lindsey and Ian — went to live with Tara’s only sibling, Alicia Standerfer in Ohio. Today, they are all thriving and working to raise awareness of domestic violence, despite their past.

They are all involved in Tara’s Walk, an annual event to raise money and awareness for victims of domestic violence and during the 10th anniversary on Saturday, they said their mother would be proud...

Tara Grant's family returns for 11th walk in her memory

Alicia Standerfer says part of the reason she and her family return to Macomb County each year for the Tara Walk is the feedback they get.

Many people approached, thanked and embraced Standerfer and her family during the 11th, or 10th annual, Tara’s Walk at Freedom Hill County Park in Sterling Heights, held to bring awareness to domestic violence and maintain the memory of Tara Grant, 34, who was killed by her husband in 2007 in their Washington Township home.

“That’s why we come every year,” Standerfer said following another exchange with a group. “People identify with Tara’s story because she had such a normal life and it was taken away from her.”

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month...
