Cops confirm body belonged to missing woman

KINDERHOOK - After three days of waiting, police identified the remains found in an abandoned home in Kinderhook.

Dental records and an ID inside a pocket book confirmed the skeletal remains belong to Kristina Karnilova. The 57-year-old Boston woman was reported missing from Kinderhook in May 2006.

Two people touring the 150-year-old home on Hudson Street in Columbia County made the grim discovery Friday. The badly decomposed body had likely been there in the basement since May 23, 2006 -- the day Karnilova was reported missing.

While there's no hard proof of this yet, police say everyone involved in this case believes Karnilova took her own life. Just before she disappeared, she even had a stranger mail a letter to a family member. It contained money and said goodbye.
