A female guerrilla deserted Colombia's largest rebel army and carried a 4-year-old hostage on a 24-hour jungle trek back to his family, authorities said.
The guerrilla hiked through the jungle with Brian Rincon Arias in her arms to reach a military base in the northeast border town of Arauquita on Tuesday, Gen. Jose Joaquin Cortes, head of the army's second division, told local media.
The child was kidnapped in June from a nursery school in the city of Cucuta and was placed in the care of the female guerrilla, who was identified only by her nickname, "La Negra."

At least one of these $@!*(&# appears to have a heart.... I am so happy for this child and his parents.

OMGosh, that's so wonderful! That poor child must have missed his parents so much.

What will happen to "La Negra" now? :(

I haven't heard much in the media lately about the kidnapping situation. For a while there it was big news on the major networks. Guess there must not be any US citizens in that situation currently.

That is great news. I have never heard of children being kidnapped. There was a story on CNN not long ago of a Colombian/French woman who has been held for 8 years. She said she is not doing well and for her family to continue to send her messages. Thier government really needs to do something and save these people. They have had some hostages for more than a decade. One man escaped about a year ago and told of many hostages being held captive.

Actually, yes there are - at least three... It's in one of those links, the second one I think.

It also was mentioned in one of the articles that La Negra is put into some kind of program to help her reintegrate into society. Geez Taxi, don't you read the links?!? ;) :D

ETA there are pictures of the three in the slideshow on the second link... here's the direct link to that: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/te...ionName=WorldUSAmericas&randnum=1196966169218

Here's the site of Marc Gonsalves, one of the American hostages: http://www.marc-gonsalves.com/

It really is about all three of them, and it doesn't seem very up to date.

It's just sickening and it makes me very angry. Be a rebel, fine. But don't go holding innocent people hostage for your purposes. I have to step away from this a bit because of how angry this makes me.

Here's a link to a letter/email writing campaign: http://www.heldhostageincolombia.com/documents/Letter_Campaign_FINAL.html

The U.S. government, which considers the FARC a terrorist group, refuses to negotiate for the return of Gonsalves or the two other Americans captured with him: Tom Howes, now 52, of Merritt Island, Fla., and Keith Stansell, now 41, of Colquitt, Ga. All three were civilian employees of California Microwave Systems, a unit of Northrop Grumman Corp., working under U.S. military contract to conduct aerial surveys of areas where coca crops are grown.

Old article but nothing has changed....

Three Venezualan hostages might be realeased soon:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,318537,00.html

The three hostages are former Colombian congresswoman Consuelo Gonzalez, Clara Rojas — an aide to former Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt — and Rojas' young son, Emmanuel, reportedly born of a relationship with a rebel fighter.

[snip]

(Gonzalez' daughter Maria) Perdomo called it "a small light" for the families of 44 other high-profile hostages — including politicians, police officers and three American defense contractors.

Let's hope so....

I was afraid something like this would happen:
http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/americas/12/31/colombia.hostages.ap/index.html?eref=rss_topstories

A Venezuelan-led mission to rescue three hostages, including a young boy, from leftist rebels in Colombia's jungles fell apart Monday, as the guerrillas accused Colombia's military of sabotaging the promised handoff.

[snip]

(Colombian President Alvaro Uribe) made the shocking suggestion that the guerrillas "don't dare to keep their promises because they don't have the boy, Emmanuel" -- who the FARC announced two weeks ago they'd free along with his mother, Clara Rojas, and former congresswoman Consuelo Gonzalez.

[snip]

Uribe last month abruptly ended Chavez' efforts to broker a wider swap of 44 high-profile hostages -- including three American defense contractors and former Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt -- for hundreds of jailed rebels.

Who'da thunk... the FARC was lying indeed.

DNA analysis indicates a 3-year-old boy living in a Bogota foster home is the child of a woman held captive by leftist rebels for nearly six years, Colombia's top prosecutor said Friday.
The results suggest President Alvaro Uribe was right — and that the leftist rebels misled Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and the world when they promised to release the boy along with his mother Clara Rojas and another hostage from their jungle camps.

JanetElaine, I remember this thread now. I just wasn't putting two and two together. Thanks.

I know both of these women have looks of such despair. I am not sure which one it was but one of them said something to the affect of how horrible it is to be the only woman there in a camp of men... I hope they are set free safely soon.

SAN JOSE DE GUAVIARE, Colombia — Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez announced that two hostages were freed by Colombian rebels Thursday, saying he spoke with the Colombian women by phone and they are being flown out of the jungle aboard Venezuelan helicopters.
Chavez said in Caracas that Clara Rojas — an aide to former Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt — and former congresswoman Consuelo Gonzalez, would arrive in Venezuela within about three hours.

JanetElaine, where are you!! Did you see the news. They have released these two women. This is a start, I hope our soldiers are home soon too.

Yes I saw the news! I'm afraid to be too happy yet though, until I see something on the news about them really being freed.... but if it really happens this time that's awesome. I know two is just the tip of the iceberg, but it gives some hope... a little tiny bit of hope for the others.
I tried to post this earlier when I read it, but I kept getting the 'server too busy' message. Thanks for being on top of it!

Colombia's government says it wants to swap high-profile captives like Betancourt and three Americans snatched in 2003 for jailed rebels. But the two sides are deadlocked over conditions for a hostage exchange.
In a video released by the FARC last year, Betancourt appeared gaunt and depressed. She told her mother in a letter she was barely eating and her hair was falling out in clumps.

I believe they are talking about the American soldiers. I hope so, I hope they all come home soon.

Americans, Ingrid Betancourt rescued from FARC.

Former Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt describes her rescue from leftist rebels as "a miracle." Secret agents tricked the insurgents and freed Betancourt and 14 other hostages from the Colombian jungle by pretending an "international mission" was on its way to visit them.
