Jefferson Parish sheriff's detectives first suspected that one of their co-workers, traffic Deputy Mark Hebert, might have dabbled in burglary and credit card theft. Now, however, they are onto something more troubling.

A search of Hebert's homes and vehicles turned up a driver's license, car keys, credit card and several bank checks belonging to a Metairie man who hasn't been seen in more than two months, authorities said Wednesday.

Sheriff Newell Normand shied away from calling Hebert a suspect in the disappearance of Albert Bloch, 61. But at a news conference he acknowledged that Bloch could be dead, calling it a "worst-case scenario."

From mikkismom's link above:

Hebert was a Jefferson County sheriff's deputy in 2007 when Bloch, a Metairie, LA., resident, was involved in a one-vehicle accident. Investigators say that while Bloch was hospitalized, Hebert obtained his debit card and drained his bank account.

After Bloch got out of the hospital, he complained to the bank about the charges on his card and obtained a new one. Bloch was last seen in Hebert's company, investigators say.

Unbelievable. :furious:

Just did a bit of googling and found this. Yikes! Obviously this didn't happen to Shane, but how does this even happen?

http://www.fbi.gov/neworleans/press...raud-and-aggravated-identity-theft-violations

"The scheme began when Hebert, in his capacity as a Jefferson Parish sheriff’s deputy, responded to an automobile accident involving Albert Bloch and stole Bloch’s VISA debit card, as well as other items. While Bloch was hospitalized following the accident, Hebert used that debit card to make unauthorized purchases of merchandise, including two Global Positioning System units and to withdraw funds from Bloch’s Chase Bank account via automated teller machines (ATMs)."

It seems as though I've been reading a lot of unflattering references recently about LE in Jefferson Parish -- not in this thread and not specific to Shane, but in other forums and comments under news articles. I hope everything is on the up and up with why they're not releasing information. IMO

Unreal. Just ...Unreal.

OMG!!!! Look at this one!!

http://www.nola.com/crime/index.ssf/2013/11/6_years_after_man_goes_missing.html

"A former Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputy admitted in federal court Wednesday to looting a missing Metairie man's bank account, settling charges that had implicated him in the death of a man whose body was never found.

But whether Mark Hebert, a troubled ex-traffic deputy, will be held responsible for killing Albert Bloch, a 61 year old presumed dead, will be up to a judge.

The prosecution stems from an August 2007 single-vehicle wreck that gravely injured Bloch. Hebert responded to the call, and then began a scheme to defraud him, authorities say."

Which officer responded to the 911 call!?

Even if he was out on parole, one ''wonders'' aloud if he possessed a scanner and could boogey fast to the scene before LE could attend?

Great sleuthing there Juli99

((some of those comments re access ''lots of land'' were particularly chilling))

Very disturbing -- another thoughts, was why did he think he could get away with it? Was it because there was a culture of corruption and he was just the guy who got caught?

But I am not sure if this would have any relevance to Shane's disappearance. This particular ex-cop (Herbert) was in jail in 2008 and the article said he was released on parole earlier this year (2014). So unless he was out in 2011 and went back in sometime after, he was not involved. But even if he were out and had a scanner to notify him of accidents, or some other corrupt cop was on the scene, what would be their motivation to make Shane disappear? Did he have a lot of money on him?

Interesting find, Juli. I would like to know which officer arrived first on the scene as well.
And if Shane's bank account has been checked for any activity, and credit cards for charges, following his disappearance. Also, his home for missing items or cash .

There is another person, who was originally charged, and then against whom charges were later dropped.

"St. Tammany Parish authorities dropped the charges against a second suspect in the disappearance, former police officer Norman Manton Jr., of Covington."

There also seem to be a lot of single vehicle accidents in this area. It's quite odd, if you ask me.

"Megan Manton, 18, was traveling west on LA 3234, or Wardline Road, west of Interstate 55, when she ran off the left side of the road and the corner of her Jeep Cherokee hit a light pole, Trooper Nick Manale, Troop L spokesman, said in a press release."

And even different kinds of accidents:

"Her son David J. Manton died in 2010 in a freak gun accident."

Wow. my head hurts. So, this one cop was accused of a crime but the witness recanted; said she was told to say that. His son was the one killed in a freak gun accident and he and his wife are suing the sheffi's office for stealing from them. The sheriff's office has a history of confiscating items and selling them for a profit.

I was very much in the camp that believed Shane wandering off due to a head injury then succumbing to his injuries. I believe that is a strong possibility, but this police department needs to be looked at very closely too.
There is just too much going on in that dept.

Yes, and their daughter was killed two weeks later in a single vehicle accident. I know it is all coincidence, but wow.

Just checking out coinkydinks here ;)

Could someone please help me find the above bolded addy on google maps. When I put in Wardline Rd, Covington, it comes up with a short road and no LA3234 or Interstate 55 anywhere near it.

Thanks !!
