Nearly six years after two LSU graduate students were killed, a jury has cleared the two men accused of their deaths. The jury deliberated six hours before finding Casey Gathers and Michael Lewis not guilty...
In 2008, Gathers and Lewis were arrested in Vermilion Parish. Parker was arrested by the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office on an unrelated simple robbery charge. He made a plea deal and agreed to testify during the trial.
In the arrest warrant, police said, "Devin Parker admitted that he was present with the co-defendants at the apartment complex on the LSU campus where the two murders occurred." According to the warrant, "Parker described what occurred inside...including the fact that Casey Gathers shot both of the victims."
In an unexpected twist, an accomplice involved in the 2007 slayings of two Louisiana State University students received a 32-year prison sentence Oct. 29, even as a jury last month found the two main suspects in the case not guilty.
Devin Jamell Parker, 24, had turned state’s witness in the Dec. 13, 2007 killing of two doctoral students from Andhra Pradesh, Kiran Kumar Allam and Chandhrasekhar Komma Reddy, and testified against the two suspects in the case... Parker plea-bargained and was expected to get a 10-year sentence in exchange for his testimony.
But in court Oct. 29, East Baton Rouge County Judge Richard “Chip” Moore accused Parker of delivering inconsistent testimony in the case, which allowed Gathers and Lewis to go free. Moore said Parker told “half-truths” to prosecutors, in order to get a lighter sentence on charges of armed robbery and accessory to murder.
