Fifteen months after Ajaylin Coley's death, Crockett, 51, of West Palm Beach, pleaded guilty Wednesday in the baby's death and was sentenced to 10 years' probation. Her first year of probation will include house arrest. Circuit Judge Jack Cook also forbade Crockett from having any contact with the boyfriend, Marvin Darville...
While baby-sitting her granddaughter on Dec. 23, 2003, Crockett and Darville got into an argument about Darville's methadone pills, prosecutor Jennifer Millien said. Darville told police that Crockett got upset when he short-counted her some of his pills... As the couple argued in Darville's van, the pill bottle spilled and Ajaylin, who was in a rear seat, ingested a tablet, according to Millien.
When an orange substance began foaming from the baby's mouth, Crockett wiped Ajaylin's face and retrieved the rest of the pill out of her mouth but never sought medical care. The baby's mother called 911 later that night after two children in her apartment noticed Ajaylin wasn't breathing.
