Details of Disappearance

Copsey was last seen walking to her family's residence in the Tacoma, Washington area on September 17, 1992. She was returning from the Puyallup Fairgrounds in Puyallup, Washington at the time; she had gone there with a close female friend. Copsey missed the 8:40 p.m. Pierce Transit bus back to her neighborhood in Spanaway, Washington and decided to walk home, which was eight miles from the bus stop. She never arrived and has not been seen again. She is not believed to have been carrying any money at the time of her disappearance.

Investigators conducted periodic searches for Copsey throughout the remainder of 1992 and into 1993. They discovered her underwear, jeans, shoes and one of her socks, covered with mud and rolled up in a ditch near the intersection of State Highway 410 and Weyco Road, on February 7, 1993, nearly four months after her disappearance. All of the clothes were the ones she had worn on the day of her disappearance. The ditch was located near the Mud Mountain Dam area of Washington. Copsey's hair pick and toothbrush were located on February 20, 1993, approximately one-half mile from the location of her clothes. She carried both the items in her purse at the time of her disappearance.

The place where Copsey's belongings were found is in the same general vicinity as where the bodies of two murdered teenage girls were found earlier. Kimberly DeLange, 15, disappeared in July 1988; Anna Chebetnoy, 14, disappeared two years and one month later in August 1990; Copsey disappeared two years and one month after that in September 1992. DeLange and Chebetnoy disappeared from the same shopping center in Puyallup. DeLange's remains were found in August 1988 and Chebetnoy's in September 1991. Investigators believe the three cases may be related, but DeLange and Chebetnoy's homicides remain unsolved and no hard evidence links them to Copsey's disappearance.

There has been no trace of Copsey since her belongings were located, although an unconfirmed report did place her somewhere in northern Minnesota shortly after her disappearance. Copsey was originally thought to be a runaway, but authorities have since revised that opinion, as she was a good student in 1992 with no problems at home and no history of runaway behavior. She is described as a conscientious and levelheaded but naive teenager. Investigators and Copsey's mother and the police believe she met with foul play, possibly at the hands of a serial killer. In May 2000, the Pierce County Medical Examiner's office issued a death certificate for her, though her remains have not been found. Copsey's case remains unsolved.
