HONOLULU (AP) -- A man dressed in hospital garb threw a toddler 30 feet from a pedestrian overpass onto a major highway Thursday, and the boy was later pronounced dead, authorities said.

A 23-year-old man was arrested after witnesses saw him throwing something, followed him and called police, authorities said. One or two vehicles may have struck the 21/2-year-old, but it was unclear exactly what killed him.

There were no reports of a missing child, police Capt. Frank Fujii said. Officers were contacting day-care centers and other area facilities to find out where the child came from.

"It's a sad incident. It's something we never wished happened," Fujii said.

That's awful! How frightening for that little boy.

Is it the economy? What the hell is it?!?! Everyday, another sick twisted story!

I'm so sick of hearing these stories and knowing the hell these kids probably went through already in their short lives even before the final evil act. Maybe drugs are involved in some of the more bizarre cases.

Police believe they have found the relatives of the child. The child has not yet been identified.

The man screamed "Thank you for everything" to television crews as he was escorted to a cell block. While in a police car, he rocked back and forth in the back seat.

Johnnie Bruen told KITV that the man calmly walked away from the overpass after dropping the child Thursday afternoon. Bruen later chased the man up a hill among houses and low-rise apartment buildings near the freeway.

"He didn't say anything, he didn't scream; he looked like a normal person standing there smoking a cigarette, except that he had on a smock," Bruen said. "That's just a horrible sight that I seen down there, for any man to do that to a child."

The boy, 1, was found dead on the freeway's far right, westbound lane, officials said. He was hit by at least one vehicle, police said.
Higa's Iolani Avenue neighbors said Higa lived upstairs from the boy in an apartment building. The mother of the toddler cried out last night after discovering it was her child who had been killed. She screamed hysterically after her father confirmed her son was dead.

He lived in the same apartment complex, not sure how he actually got his hands on the child though.

This is horrible, this poor mother. It sounds like her BF and dad didn't keep a real good eye on him, the cops had brought him back once that day after he wonder away. Then the GF was sleeping while watching a not even 2 year old. The man sounds crazy, as the mother stated he would always try to forcibly hold the child and they wouldn't let him. Why would he do this? What a psycho!

I can't take reading this section of WS. How do all of us reconcile the earnest and effort we exercise daily in our lives, when things like this are happening all around us?

Man throws baby (babies) off bridge (more than just ONE shytehead has done this recently!)
Woman kills her 87-year-old mother. (WTF? After having cared for my mom in my home in 2006 when she was suddenly diagnosed with terminal brain cancer [she went to her resting place under my care -- and with that of a 24/7 live-in SUPER HUMAN caregiver which I hired] .... I cannot even imagine such an atrocity. This one hits home for me. I MISS MY MOM SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She was not ready to die!!!!!!!!!!!)
Drunk arsehole wipes out 5 members of one family.
"Boy in the box"

It's too much to comprehend.
Here we are ... living our lives, being the best humans we can be (on PURPOSE) and there are oh-so-very many others in our midst, seemingly WANTING to make others' lives miserable - or take others' lives.

It's a senseless and cruel world.
Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?????????????????

im with you maddydecaf.

i read, i ponder, i try to help people i know who are in trouble or making bad decisions so i DONT have to read about them. i grieve, painfully at times, and yet even if i vow to stay away from these areas, i come back.

im speechless at times also, shocked by the horrific quality of our lives in this day and age. what can be done. i ask that question every single day.

i had a thought once, it's all that keeps me going sometimes. maybe, the families of these people who have been taken from them, maybe the pain is like a giant heavy blanket/carpet thing, and just maybe, if an extra person or two takes some of this pain into themselves,(unknown to the family) just maybe thier load will be an ounce or two lighter. its probably very bad for my health to carry the pain of so many families but i don't care, i wont stop trying to help.

This is a classic case-I bet the guy is schizophrenic....that poor mother will spend the rest of her life reliving that day, knowing that the cops brought that child back for wandering away the very same day and then this lunatic gets his hands on him....the police couldn't bother to call the mom and let her know her son was found wandering? maybe they did...

My husband just said it is due to evilness.
*sighs*

I am sick of hearing about children being killed because of someones boyfriend/babysitter/relative. Heck, even their own mother.

This is awful.. Have they identified the child yet? Surely someone would notice of their 2-yr-old was missing. I'd bet serious money that this man is severely mentally ill.

I'm pretty sure they know the identity of the child since it has been said that he babysat for the child sometimes.

Found some new information, SCM.

Police Learn the Identity of Murdered Toddler

Police spent the day trying to identify the toddler who was thrown onto the freeway.

When officials learned who he was, they spent the evening trying to notify the family.

The mother of the 2 year-old boy, was one of the last in her family to find out about her 2- year old son.

Police and relatives tried to reach her all day.

The mother found out about her 2 year-olds death just a few hours ago.

She ran into her home-screaming- why weren't you watching him?

Police don't know who was supposed to be watching the boy named Cyrus before he was killed today

The suspects name is Matthew Higa and the child knew him:

From the link I just posted:

One neighbor saw Matthew Higa just this morning

"Saw him today, sitting right there he's a loner always by himself smoking a cigarette," says Charlie Ornellas, a Neighbor.

He also saw the 2 year old boy across the street from the apartment complex a few hours later.

"In front of the garage out there," points Ornellas.

An off-duty officer saw the same thing and picked the toddler up.

When he called for back up, a man who claimed to be the mother's boyfriend took the toddler back home.

But that's the last time he was seen.

Who's to Blame- Pointing Fingers at Toddler's Death

Because there are so many question marks about who had cyrus last, the family of the toddler say they all feel responsible for his death.

Cyrus's family along with the entire community are reaching for more answers of how this could happen to such an innocent child.

Cyrus Belt's Grandpa says there are no words that can explain the pain the family is going through.

and

The question marks are too big to bare.

"When things go wrong, you're the one everyone's pointing fingers to because you're the head of the family," says Lilo Asiata.

Lilo Asiata says he was sleeping throughout the morning, and did not know the boy was alone.

"That's why I didn't do anything because I wasn't woken up by my daughter," says Lilo Asiata.

Father Says Suspect in Baby’s Death Was Mentally Ill

The father of a 23 year old man accused of throwing a toddler to its death off a pedestrian bridge that spans the H-1 Freeway says his son Matthew Higa has a history of mental illness, but never received treatment.

Shelton Higa spoke to Khon2 a few hours after his son was arrested by police Thursday afternoon. He said his son has only a few traffic violations and has never been in trouble with the law.

While arriving at the main police cellblock, Matthew Higa displayed bizarre behavior when questioned by reporters. “Thank you for everything,” a handcuffed Higa screamed, as he was taken to be booked and fingerprinted under heavy guard.

The person responsible is Matthew Higa-everyone else can take on their piece of guilt for creating his access to the baby-however Matthew is the lunatic who threw this precious being into traffic.
