Cary police on Tuesday evening confirmed that charred remains found in Mecklenburg County, Va., were those of a woman reported missing Thursday.

Firefighters responding to a report of a brush fire in a wooded area just off Interstate 85 in Mecklenburg County found the remains last Wednesday. Vanlata Patel, 57, of Woodway Bluff in Cary, was reported missing the next day by her son after she failed to board a plane to Canada, where she was going to visit him, officials said in a press release Tuesday night.

"When I learned that she was really missing, I was shocked. I was really shocked,” her estranged husband, Harish Patel, said.

Harish Patel said he has been separated from his wife for a while and was devastated to hear she had disappeared.

"I am a mess. I am a big mess. I just do not understand what to do and how to deal with the situation,” Harish Patel said.

The Patels had been married since 1996 and had adult children from previous marriages. She filed for divorce in November.
Court records show Vanlata Patel had a dispute with her estranged husband over how their financial assets should be divided.
In her divorce complaint, Vanlata Patel requested a majority of more than $400,000 in Swiss bank accounts that she shared with Harish Patel, including $100,000 she claimed was a gift from her parents that she was keeping in the account for her son from a previous marriage. After a three-week trial, jurors convicted Harish P. Patel, 61, of the first-degree murder of Vanlata Patel. The 57-year-old woman, who had moved from Cary to Canada after leaving her husband, was either suffocated or strangled to death on Jan. 16, 2008...

Morgan sentenced Patel to a lifetime behind bars, without the chance of parole...

Vanlata's family described her as a kind woman who had immigrated to the United States from her birthplace, Nairobi, Kenya, in the 1990s. She was of Indian descent. Mina Patel said one of her sister's proudest moments was becoming a U.S. citizen several years ago.
