Smithfield — Authorities are trying to determine if a truck found on a Johnston County car lot is connected to a missing-person case.

Barry McConnell discovered a black GMC Denali when he arrived at his car lot near the intersection of Interstate 40 and N.C. Highway 210 Tuesday morning. The truck had a window broken out, and its interior was covered with blood.

The truck belongs to Martin Garza, 43, from Wilmington, authorities said. He was last seen Monday at a Wal-Mart in the Wallace community in Duplin County.

Martin Garza, 42, owner of a construction business, was last seen at a Wal-Mart in Wallace with two men last Monday evening, Johnston County Sheriff Steve Bizzell said. His black GMC Denali was found at Ron's Classic Cars the next morning by a car lot employee.

The men, Socrates Taboada Gomez, 26, and Wilmer Alexis-Cruz Alvarado, 22, both of the Wilmington area, were believed to have been with Mr. Garza the night he disappeared.

"We have reason to believe that they know some of the details of Martin Garza's disappearance," Sheriff Bizzell said. "We (also) have reason to believe this disappearance could possibly be drug related."

No one will speculate on Garza's status at this point, but Johnston County Sheriff Steve Bizzell suggested officials are already fearing the worst.
"We have reason to believe Martin Garza is in danger or it could possibly be worse than that," Bizzell said Friday night from Duplin County, where he was working with investigators. "It's not looking good."
