A Brick Township woman died but her husband survived after the pair apparently tied themselves together and walked into the ocean yesterday, authorities said.
The couple were found at 6:30 a.m. on the beach in Seaside Park, said Robert Gasser, a spokesman for the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.
The 74-year-old man and his 72-year-old wife were discovered near 11th Avenue by a fisherman, according to Gasser. The prosecutor's office declined to release the names of the victims until police could confirm their identities.
"They tied themselves back-to-back and walked into the ocean," Gasser said. "There was no evidence of foul play."
The man had a faint pulse and was resuscitated at the scene, said Seaside Park Police Chief William Beining. The victim was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River where he was in stable but critical condition last night, Gasser said.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene at 8 a.m., Beining said.
The couple drove to the beach and parked their car, Gasser said. They then used cable television wire to tie themselves together and apparently walked sideways into the surf, Gasser said.
Gasser said he did not know how long they had been in the water before they washed ashore. The water temperature was 39 degrees, he added.
Gasser said the death was a possible suicide but did not know if a note was found or what may have prompted the couple to walk into the ocean.
