CHARLEVOIX--Authorities investigating the alleged slaying of Hudsonville man William Merriman are looking for a person or company that removed a freezer from the victim's father's East Jordan residence during the summer of 2006. County sheriff's Detective Michael Wheat said he believes the freezer may contain evidence of Merriman's death. Authorities have arrested Merriman's older brother, Charles, and charged him with murder. Police have not found the victim's body. He was reported missing in September 2006. Authorities located William Merriman's blood and noticed missing carpeting pieces when they began investigating.

CHARLEVOIX--An East Jordan man accused of killing his brother who has been missing for more than a year was bound over to face trial on a charge of open murder following a marathon preliminary examination Thursday.

Charles “Chuck” Merriman Jr., 58, is accused of killing his brother William Merriman, then-54, on or about June 15, 2006, at their parents’ home near East Jordan.

Despite the fact that William Merriman’s body has never been found, the day before Merriman was arrested in late August, the 7th Probate Court granted a motion by Charlevoix County Prosecutor John Jarema to have William Merriman legally declared dead.

The most lengthy testimony Thursday came from Charlevoix County Sheriff’s Office Det./Lt. Michael Wheat, who was in charge of the year-long investigation.
