A man slashed a 56-year-old psychologist to death at her Upper East Side office clinic and seriously injured another therapist who tried to help her, police said.

Police said a meat cleaver was used in Tuesday night's fatal attack on Kathryn Faughey, and another knife also may have been used.

A manhunt was under way for the attacker, who police believe may have been one of her patients.

Serious attacks by patients on their mental health providers are rare. "This is, I think, an extraordinary occurrence," said Sharon Brennan, a psychologist in Manhattan and a spokeswoman for the New York State Psychological Association. "It has had a shocking impact on the whole New York community."

The attack happened at about 9 p.m., police said.

I just saw this on aol news page. How horrible for the therapist who died, her colleague who tried to help her, and the poor patient who witnessed this!

Looks like there are a lot of clues. Caught on video. Also, he brought (and left behind) a backpack with adult diapers and blouses!? Sounds like he was maybe going to kidnap or take her hostage. Also rope, duct tape.

I am wondering if this was a family member of one of her patients. So sad.:(

Eyewitness News is told a suspect in the Upper East Side murder of a psychologist is being questioned by police in Pennsylvania.
Officials say the 43-year-old suspect is being held in a Pennsylvania State Police barracks as NYPD police continue to gather evidence from the Upper East Side crime scene.
Eyewitness News is also told that the man apparently met the victim at a guitar camp six years ago.
 
I was walking to the 6 train to go home right after all this had happened. Was wondering what in the world was going on.

So scary to just be at work doing your normal thing and all of the sudden some psycho starts attacking you with a meat clever.
I hope they have caught the right guy. With all the evidence left at the scene it looks to be an open and shut case as far as a who-done-it.

Wow. So the diapers got him caught. I'm wondering though if he was a patient? Could this poor woman have taken him on as a patient if they met socially? Prayers for the other Doctor as well. Thank goodness no patients were in either office.

The man being questioned met victim Kathryn Faughey at a guitar camp six years ago with her husband and were friends but not romantically linked, one of the officials said. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.
Pennsylvania State Police spokeswoman Cpl. Lynette Quinn confirmed that New York detectives conducted an interview related to the case Thursday morning inside the agency's Bethlehem barracks.
The man is in his 40s and has not been arrested. The man was found through Faughey's recent e-mail records, and was picked up by Pennsylvania State Troopers at his home without incident around 4:30 a.m. Thursday, police said.

Suzi, perhaps the other Doctor is actually his Doctor and the man got a referral from Doctor Faughey to go to him? There also was a female patient seeing that male Doctor and she is a witness. I hadn't seen that until now. No way can I even begin to grasp how that lady is doing. Also, I had just seen Doctor Faughey is one of seven children of Irish immigrant parents. Her husband's name is Walter Adam. This poor family. The thing creeped me out the most was the slippers.

That's a good question, Suzi. The adult diapers didn't weird me out as much as the slippers because not too long ago we had a thread going about a pedophile who sold them online. I understand that's a fetish, and not all folks into adult diapers are going to harm someone. Cross dressing doesn't weird me out. Slippers maybe because they are for rest? They are for comfort and specifically for staying in the home? If they would have said seven inch heels and platforms the guy had it just wouldn't have struck me like this. Then again do we know if the clothes were for him? Who were the diapers for? Either way I know something so horrible and depraved should just sicken and shock me altogether. BTW, I checked out places in PA with adult diapers. It's looking like they are all upstate. I wonder if the guitar camp was in Pennsy?

Me too, Pharlap. Now this article says the reports of him being snagged because of the adult diapers is incorrect. Also, he left the suitcases by the door of the basement according to this article and must have known the building. Perhaps originally he was going to abduct this poor woman thus the diapers. Who was the suitcase for? In the surveillance tape he just parks it and leaves. It wasn't a small suitcase either. Not easy to drag around. So why drag it around?

It had to be for him then, right? Why leave it? He couldn't have abducted the Doctor and just casually went and wheeled his big suitcases around again. Unless he meant to take her in the basement, and hold her there. Suzie, I know why the slippers freaked me out the most. At wakes sometimes they used to put slippers on the body. I do not go to wakes. The first time I saw a body at a wake who had slippers on I recall really getting upset. Whatever. Hopefully the guy they have is the right guy. He had to know he was on camera. Guy just didn't care.
