GUILTY PA - Chester Miller, 18, starved to death, Hazleton, 25 Sept 2002

sorry Toth, but your line reminds me of Marie Antoinette's famous line, 'Let them eat cake'.

I am sure that besides not being fed, he was not given much parental involvement either. I am sure his developmemt into an independant adult, was seriously delayed, and he probably only functioned as a 10 - 12 year old, and didnt understand that there was a world out there.

Putting any blame on this poor kid is not going in the right direction.

I seem to recall that there was a lot more to this story. What, I don't remember right now, but when if first happened there was quite a bit of discussion here.

yes... the old thread is long gone unfortunately..

here are a few other articles.

It's the kind of story that makes you feel ashamed to be a human being, that makes you want to put your head down and cry, that makes you want to grab someone by the collar and beat some sense into them or maybe beat them senseless.

The investigation by Hazleton police has been ongoing since Miller died last Sept. 25 at the Santa Rosa Medical Center in Milton, Fla. At the time of his death, the 5 foot 2 inch teenager weighed 62 pounds.

"I don't think first-degree murder applies at all. That would constitute some sort of prior intent to cause death, and I don't believe that was the case," the attorney said.

Luzerne County Animal Control Officer Wayne Harvey said 47-year-old Lyda Miller and her boyfriend, Michael Gozlan, 30, were cited after Harvey found an emaciated 5-month-old puppy at their home in Hazleton...

On Sept. 19, 2002, Lyda Miller's then-boyfriend, Paul Hoffman Sr., sent Chester Miller on a bus to find and live with his natural father in Florida. Chester died in a Florida hospital six days later from chronic malnutrition...

Lyda Miller pleaded guilty in 2003 to involuntary manslaughter. She was sentenced to one to two years in prison but was granted early parole and placed under house arrest after serving about nine months. Hoffman, now 48, pleaded guilty to third-degree murder in 2004 for Chester's death and was sentenced to 10 to 20 years in state prison.
