Missing Since: July 12, 1977 from San Benito, Texas
Classification: Non-Family Abduction
Date Of Birth: July 22, 1972
Age: 4 years old
Height and Weight: 3'10, 45 pounds
Distinguishing Characteristics: Hispanic male. Red hair, brown eyes. Montelongo's height and weight are approximations.
Details of Disappearance
Montelongo was last seen playing outside of his family's residence in San Benito, Texas on July 12, 1977. His mother, Maria Conde, called police that afternoon to say her son had disappeared. An extensive search failed to find him. A neighbor said he had seen Montelongo walking along Alamo Street, but this sighting has not been confirmed.
Montelongo enjoyed playing near an area drainage ditch. At the time of his disappearance the water level in the ditch was high, so he could possibly have fallen in and been swept away. If so, however, his body was never found.
One of Montelongo's brothers died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) about one year before Montelongo vanished. Another of his brothers may have died a few months after Montelongo was reported missing, but authorities are unsure because Conde left the area in the middle of the investigation and never contacted police again. She took a polygraph test in relation to Montelongo's case, but the results have been lost in the years since his disappearance. She is thought to have passed, but she may have been intoxicated at the time the test was administered. Conde has had several children by different men and apparently has never married. Authorities do not know who Montelongo's father is.
Due to the uncertain circumstances in Montelongo's disappearance, his case is classified as a non-family abduction. The case has been open but inactive since 1973. Authorities have renewed their attempts to find Conde and re-interview her about her son's disappearance. She may be in Michigan. Montelongo's case remains unsolved.
