Li's mother says time has not dulled the pain much. It's been almost 26 years and she still has a difficult time talking about her daughter's disappearance.

"She's kept the same phone number all of these years, so that she would get that phone call," she says through her translator.

The Missing Child Center of Hawaii has done 'age progression' drawings of Li. Showing what she might look like at 27 years old and again at 38. "The reality of seeing a photo of what her daughter might look like, she cried for days," says the translator.

I grew up on O'ahu, and there are parts of Nu'uanu that are very dicey. I never liked being in the Nu'uanu area, I just never felt safe there. The person of interest in Li's case seems very suspicious, and I can only wonder why he broke into a police officer's home, armed, after being questioned about her disappearance.

Little girl's disappearance remains one of Hawaii's biggest unsolved mysteries

What happened to Jie Zhao Li?

This year marks 30 years since the 12-year-old girl disappeared.

On February 11, 1988, Li was selling benefit chili tickets at the 7-Eleven store at the corner of Nuuanu Avenue and Kuakini Street.

Li had moved to Hawaii from China with her parents and two sisters just two years earlier. She went to Royal Elementary School.

Another tip was that someone thought they saw a young Asian girl get into a 1950s Chevy.

"So what we did was run a computer check through our research department and came up with a list of all registered Chevrolets between 1953 and 1959. And we made physical checks of every single Chevrolet," Dias said.

Nothing came of that either.

Loo told KHON2: "On behalf of Mrs. Li, she would like to extend her heartfelt appreciation to the news media, HPD, the AG's office and all of the other organizations which have so tirelessly assisted on this tragedy. Although it has been 30 years, she still thinks of Jie Zhao every single day and still has hopes for information leading to her recovery. Without fail."

Details of Disappearance
Jie Zhao was a student at Royal Elementary School in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1988. She selling Zippy's Chili tickets for a fundraiser for her class door-to-door in her neighborhood on February 11, 1988.

Her family lived in an apartment on Nuuanu Avenue, and she promised to return by approximately 6:00 p.m. Her mother gave her a wristwatch and Jie Zhao said she would time herself when selling her tickets. She never returned home.

Jie Zhao was last seen near the 7-11 convenience store on Nuuanu Avenue and Kuakini Street, just a few blocks from her home, at approximately 4:45 p.m. She approached people going in and out of the convenience store to ask if they wanted to buy her tickets.

She was speaking to people as they were getting in and out of their cars, and witnesses stated she may have gotten into a Chevrolet sedan, described as a 1955, 1956 or 1957 model. Later efforts to track down and question all the owners of vehicles that met that description resulted in no leads.

Jie Zhao's family began searching for her that evening; the authorities were brought in the following morning. In spite of a massive search, no trace of her was wever found. Investigators believe Jie Zhao was abducted by a non-family member, and foul play is suspected in her case.

Sketches of a person of interest are posted with this case summary. The man has never been identified and it is unclear whether he was involved in Jie Zhao's case.

Jie Zhao was born in China and emigrated to the United States three years before her disappearance. Her family has kept the same telephone number since 1988, in case she tries to contact them. Her case remains unsolved.

in a 2014 news report regarding Li's disappearance, a bilingual (English/Chinese) poster of her is shown. According to the poster, her Chinese name looks to be Jie Chao Li (李结超), is it possible that her name was spelled wrong this whole time?
