She's been missing for a year, and now the family of a Scott County grandmother has given up hope they'll find her alive.

The mini-van of Jean Johnson, 66, was found abandoned in an Oneida parking lot.

Investigators even caution against giving up hope.

"We're closer, let's put it that way, said Chief Deputy Bobby Ellis with the Scott County Sheriffs Department. That's all I can say at this time."

According to investigators, Jean Johnson's ex-husband Douglas Whisnant still remains a suspect in her disappearance, but he hasn't been charged.

The sheriff's office says it plans to release a full report of its search efforts in the next few weeks.

Whisnant finally indicted for murder

"One year after Jean Johnson disappeared, her ex-husband, Douglas Whisnant, has been indicted for her murder. Whisnant has been the top person of interest all along in the case.

Her family feels relief that he has finally been charged with her murder.

Whisnant has been indicted on one count of first degree murder, one count of aggravated kidnapping and one count of theft.

Prosecutors are confident they can get a conviction, based on DNA evidence linking Whisnant to Johnson’s disappearance."

Her body has never been found.

Two years have passed since Jean Johnson disappeared from her Ditney Trail home, but her family has not stopped searching for the whereabouts of their missing loved one.

On Tuesday, supporters from the community gathered with Johnsons family in the Oneida First Trust & Savings Bank parking lot where Johnsons van was discovered five days after authorities believe she was abducted and murdered for a candlelight vigil. It marked the second consecutive year that her family and friends have gathered on the anniversary of her disappearance, a gesture that is symbolic of the ongoing search for her whereabouts.

Well they finally found her...

HUNTSVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The Scott County Sheriff's Office says it believes it has located the remains of Jean Johnson, who has been missing for more than three years.

Johnson disappeared in February of 2007. The investigation into her disappearance quickly centered around her ex-husband, Doug Whisnutt, who was arrested March 8, 2007 on outstanding warrants taken out by Johnson two weeks before her disappearance.

The search for Johnson's body was unsuccessful, but investigators located several illegal weapons that Whisnutt had hidden in a fake wall.

Whisnutt was later sentenced to 25 years in prison for illegally possessing the guns, including machine guns. He was also served a criminal court indictment for Johnson's murder.

After more than 3 years, a Scott County family can finally bury their mother. Scott County Sheriff Anthony Lay announced late Tuesday night that the body of Jean Johnson had been found.

A judge entered an order awarding $33 million to the children of Jean Johnson here Monday morning... signaling the end of a long legal battle that began when Johnson disappeared from her Ditney Trail home in eastern Scott County in February 2007. Whisnant pled guilty to murder charges in 2010 and is currently serving a 15-year prison sentence...

Johnson, who had been married to Whisnant for a short period of time before divorcing him, had taken out an order of protection against him prior to her death. Just days before her disappearance on Feb. 24, 2007, she swore out a criminal trespass warrant after Whisnant shot out her windows and slashed the tires on her vehicle... On May 10, 2010, Whisnant agreed to lead law enforcement personnel to Johnsons body in exchange for a reduced prison sentence. The body was found in a shallow grave at the base of Chitwood Mountain. An autopsy showed that Johnson had been shot between the eyes and had both arms broken...

According to an affidavit filed by Whisnant during his criminal case, when seeking court-appointed legal counsel, the home was valued at the time at $58,000. Crabtree, Johnsons only son, said that the family realizes they will never see much of the money from the settlement, adding that the case was not about the money. The way we see it, he got 25 years for the gun charges and 15 years for what he did to Mom, Crabtree said. With the sentences running concurrently he basically got no time for her. At least this way he gets something.
