HICKORY -- A body was found Friday afternoon just yards from where a Conover man went missing. However, police have not identified the body and will await an autopsy on Monday before confirming an identification.
Howard Lee Weaver, 67, was last seen around 8:30 p.m. March 3 paying a bill at Aaron’s on U.S. 70, SE. The next day police searched the area on foot and with dogs. A helicopter flyover occurred the following day, and family and friends have done several searches in the area since Weaver went missing.
Hickory police investigators returned to the scene Friday afternoon for more probing. One of the investigators noticed what appeared to be an article of clothing buried under brush in a ravine less than 50 yards from Aaron’s, said Hickory Police Capt. Thurman Whisnant. Upon further investigation, officers found a body.
Whisnant said investigators know the body belongs to a male, but as of 6 p.m., did not know the race. Members of the Hickory Fire Department and Hickory Rescue Squad spent the afternoon clearing brush to remove the body and preserve the scene, Whisnant said.
The body will be taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, and an autopsy is scheduled to be done Monday. Investigators hope to have an identification by Monday afternoon, Whisnant said.
In the meantime, the family of Howard Weaver waits. Family and friends gathered at the scene Friday afternoon mixed with emotions because the area had been searched several times after Weaver’s disappearance.
Weaver had two strokes in five years, his family said, and he suffers from dementia and sometimes gets confused. Family members thought that might have happened the night of March 3, and instead of driving, he tried to walk home.
Weaver has some teeth missing and a scar on his head. He walks with a limp, but does not drag his foot. He was wearing a pair of square wire-frame glasses, a blue ball cap with white writing, a button-down shirt with a collar which had red, green and tan squares on it and khaki pants. He’s black, about 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 1454 pounds. His hair is black and gray and short and his eyes are brown.
Anyone with information should call Hickory police at 328-5551.
