Thumbs up No pardon for Kwame

Obama commutes more sentences but not Kwame Kilpatrick

Christine Ferretti and Jennifer Chambers The Detroit News

    Published 3:49 p.m. ET Jan. 19, 2017 | Updated 37 minutes ago

On his final day in the White House, President Barack Obama commuted the prison sentences of 330 people including five from Michigan — but Detroit’s disgraced ex-mayor Kwame Kilpatrick wasn’t one of them.

Since the fall, nearly 28,000 supporters signed an e-petition urging Obama to pardon the former mayor or shorten his term in federal prison for public corruption.

Kilpatrick, 46, was convicted in 2013 of using his position as mayor of Detroit and state House representative to execute a wide-ranging racketeering conspiracy involving extortion, bribery and fraud...

Kilpatrick tries again to overturn conviction

    Robert Snell, The Detroit News Published 11:31 a.m. ET July 5, 2017 | Updated 11:31 a.m. ET July 5, 2017

Detroit – Former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick revived his bid for freedom Wednesday, asking a federal judge to vacate his racketeering conviction and set aside a 28-year prison sentence, saying there was no corruption during his scandal-plagued tenure.

“There was no ‘pay to play,’ nor any evidence to suggest it,” Kilpatrick wrote. “The theater surrounding the trial, and the misinformation and wrong instructions given to the jury, created an environment of unfairness and injustice. (I) did not receive a fair trial, and was convicted of activities that were not unlawful.”

Kilpatrick, 47, made the request Wednesday to his trial judge, U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds, 13 months after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected his appeal...

    Motion included within article:

Kwame Kilpatrick files motion to vacate prison sentence

    By John Steckroth - Editor

    Posted: 12:37 PM, July 05, 2017

DETROIT - Former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick filed a motion last week to overturn his convictions and set aside his prison sentence.

The motion was entered Wednesday saying the court had made several errors, many similar to the issues in his last appeal before the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The court upheld the corruption convictions.

Kilpatrick, 47, was sentenced to a prison term of 28 years in prison back in 2013 and ordered to pay $1,637,087 in restitution. Kilpatrick told the court in February that he doesn’t believe that he should have to pay because it’s impossible to calculate the amount of money he took from taxpayers...

Responsibility. He should take some. Genuine responsibility. Remorse (and not for himself). Until then, zero compassion.

Kilpatrick: I tried to beat up my lawyer

    Robert Snell, The Detroit News Published 6:53 p.m. ET July 13, 2017 | Updated 6:53 p.m. ET July 13, 2017

Detroit — Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick claimed in a court filing Thursday that he tried to assault his lawyer during an office fight on the eve of his landmark racketeering trial.

Defense lawyers denied Kilpatrick’s allegations about a heated disagreement inside his legal team’s office five years ago, a fight that Kilpatrick says included him chasing his lawyer around a conference room table.

Kilpatrick made the claim in a 38-page court filing to illustrate the broken relationship with his defense team, headed by lawyer James C. Thomas, in hopes of overturning his racketeering conviction and 28-year prison sentence. The attempt is based, in part, on claims that Thomas had a conflict of interest.

Tension between Kilpatrick — who is 6-feet-4-inches tall and weighed as much as 310 pounds before the trial — and his legal team culminated on Aug. 14, 2012, after the former Detroit mayor tried to fire Thomas...

‘Broke’ Kilpatrick ordered to pay Detroit $1.5M

    Robert Snell, The Detroit News Published 5:47 p.m. ET Aug. 31, 2017 | Updated 10:08 a.m. ET Sept. 1, 2017

Detroit — A federal judge Thursday ordered former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to pay more than $1.5 million to the city’s water department as restitution from the City Hall corruption scandal.

The city, however, is unlikely to collect. Kilpatrick recently said he has 96 cents in the prison bank account and is locked up until 2037.

The order addresses one of the lingering issues stemming from the landmark trial that ended with Kilpatrick convicted of running a criminal enterprise out of City Hall that included steering rigged water and sewer contracts to buddy Bobby Ferguson...

Kilpatrick loses bid to shed $1.5M restitution bill

    Robert Snell, The Detroit News Published 3:54 p.m. ET Sept. 25, 2017 | Updated 3:57 p.m. ET Sept. 25, 2017

Detroit – Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick lost a bid Monday to shed a $1.5 million restitution bill to the city’s water department stemming from the City Hall corruption scandal.

U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds refused to reconsider the restitution order, writing that Kilpatrick rehashed old arguments and failed to show the order was defective.

The judge’s order preserves one of the largest bills awaiting Kilpatrick, 47, once he is released from federal prison in August 2037...
