I chose my hairdresser (salon owner) initially because i liked the style she sported, cut and colour, and i've been with her for 5 years now.

btw, she's Lebanese. could be muslim or christian of scientologist, for all i care. i'm interested in having my hair done by someone who can. she has never failed me. the test has clearly been in the ongoing years she's taken care of my hair, but, again, it was because of how she looked when i initially met her which brought my business to her.

Muslim hairdresser accuses salon owner who objected to her headscarf of 'blatant' religious discrimination

The opening shots in a £34,000 employment battle between a pink-haired salon owner and a headscarf-wearing Muslim stylist were fired yesterday with an accusation of "blatant" religious discrimination.

Bushra Noah, 19, is claiming that amount in compensation after being turned down for a job at the Wedge salon, which specialises in "urban, edgy and funky" cuts.

Owner Sarah Desrosiers, 32, says it is an "absolutely basic" job requirement that stylists should have their hair on show if they are to cut other people's. She says she faces financial ruin if she loses the case.

It IS a basic requirement for the job, IMO. she's trying to pull a fast one and milk a small business owner for more than the small business owner's worth. and would she have even got the job anyway, headscarf or no? political correctness gone wild. business owners must be allowed to select their staff to their liking.

not one single penny should Bushra Noah get! :furious: :furious: :furious:

I'm so sick of all the political correstness and how we all have to be so cautious about what we say and do I could just puke!!!!

Where did our freedoms go in this country? Is free speech not an option any more? We have to be chastised for every friggin thing we say!!!

It's happening in England, not the US.

I see both sides to it. I have a male hair guy and I won't go to anyone but him. Seeing his hair doesn't reflect his ability to cut mine, but I chose him anyway after going through at least five different women. I would have no problem getting my hair cut by a woman wearing a headscarf. But I also understand that a salon catering to those who like a little funk have customers who expect a certain look from the stylists.

I think if you own your own business you should be able to choose who you want to hire. You shouldn't have to give a reason for not hiring someone. Firing yes, hiring no. Political correctness has gone way to far.

The salon owner shouldn't have even mentioned the head rag and just not hired the Muslim woman. Maybe the woman thinks anyone and everyone should hire her because she wears that thing on her head.

I'm so sick of Muslims thinking the entire world should bow down to them....headscarves, foot baths, prayer rooms in airports, etc....where will it end? It's like after 9/11 we were all supposed to treat them as heroes or something, instead of abhor what some of their group did.

Good luck to Sarah...if she has to pay the Muslim woman any money I will totally lose all faith in the world.

Actually, I wouldn't worry about her hair at all.

Remember that old story about the town with two barbers? A man goes to one barber shop and sees that the place is just rundown, and the barber has a sloppy haircut. Then, he goes to the other place and sees that everything there is in tip-top shape, including the barber's hair. So, he goes back to the first place, reasoning that if there are only 2 barbers in town, the guy with the rundown shop and sloppy hair must have done the excellent cut on the other barber, and vice versa.

In other words, I wouldn't be affected by her "edgy" cut, since I'd figure it's pretty unlikely she did it herself anyway.

this salon owner is selling a image. after all the difference between a 20 dollar cut and a 200 dollar cut is normally not 180 dollars worth of skill. to me this case is similar to having men working at hooters.

But the fact that her hair was covered would make me wonder if this hairstylist had a clue what "edgy" meant. She belongs to a religion that believes it is a SIN for my hair to be uncovered; her religion teaches that I am an infidel, something along the lines of a dirty, stinky, flea bitten dog. Would I want her touching my hair? Hell, no.

I think that Muslim women cover their heads in public out of modesty. Just like Orthodox Jews and some Christians such as the Amish and Mennonites. Believe it or not, all of these people wash and comb their hair just like anyone else.

I am glad I was not reading WS when the Amish girls were killed, as I would not have liked to have seen such venom for the harmless choice of covering one's head.

Dirty stinky flea bitten dogs? Time for a jump in the river!:)

As for this story? It's The Daily Mail! I'd have to see some other source before accepting anything they print as factual or true. Just sayin'.

In Britain, a story like this appears pretty much every day in one media outlet or another. It is a rather obvious pot-stirring by people who want to make Muslims out to be a problem. The reality is very different from what the stories try to get you to believe. Muslims do not attempt to "make the world bow down to them."

BTW, in the US if having and showing an "edgy" haircut wasn't in the job description, the prohibition on the headscarf would be illegal.

There have been many cases in the US in which black men were told they had to be clean-shaven to work a particular job and they protested because some black men get a bad skin condition when they shave. Many of them won when the shaving requirement was shown not to be related to the job.

I actually was called a dirty stinky flea bitten dog by an Islamic man. Right after he called me a "cursed infidel." All of that because he ran a stop sign and hit my car........I guess if us Christian women would just get out of his way!

I wouldn't expect the Amish or mennonites to be up on edgy hair styles, either. "Edgy" has a certain connotation, don't you think? Like the person is "hip" to the new styles? I know, "hip" what do I know about edgy, huh?

please tell me that you're joking.

I'm Jewish, part Israeli. Some of my closest friends are Muslim, and some of them are Palestinian. When 9/11 happened, they were just as shocked as anyone I know. They are more disgusted with Jihadist terrorists than anyone I know. I have Muslim friends who after 9/11 joined the military and Border Patrol, because they consider themselves Americans more than anything and wanted to defend our country!

And as for Muslims believing we should all "bow down to them" ... where did you get that idea? My Muslim friends treat me with more kindness and respect than anyone and don't ask for anything in return!! I’m saying that most Muslims I know (and I know a lot!!) are good, descent, kind-hearted people!
I have Muslim friends who, whenever an Israeli is killed by Palestinean terrorists, say prayers for the Israelis. And most of my Muslim friends don't wear anything on their heads. One of my dearest friends is Muslim – he always walks me to my car if I’m on campus at night and has bought me groceries when I couldn’t afford it. He wouldn’t let me pay him back. And btw, this is my only Muslim friend who wears a head covering.

Of course, there are crazy, violent Muslims! It happens to ALL religions! Ever heard of the Crusades? The Zealot movement of Judaism? There have been crazy people, often affiliated with religions, all throughout history. Yes, Jihadist terrorists are doing some awful, sick and twisted things these days. But that does not define all Muslims!

The hate and bigotry in a country that is supposed to be the place of ultimate acceptance is astonishing. And to think my family just adopted a girl from Iraq after her father was hurt in a bombing. We always said "Only in America can a Jewish family adopt a Muslim girl during Christmastime." After reading this I can only hope she doesn't face these attitudes in her everyday life.

You were cursed out by an a$$hole. Unfortunately, most religions that I know of have many of them in their flock. All of the Muslims that I know are extremely respectful and polite to everyone.

The hairdresser was found guilty and will have to pay Bushra Noah £4,000 for one charge of "injury to feelings". :furious:

I'm guessing that you're talknig about Muslim-Americans and Palestinian-Americans, because the footage I saw was Palestinians dancing in the streets after the towers collapsed. I've never been so enraged in my life.

"Injury to feelings?!" Give me a break! :slap:

To me the real issue is whether a business owner should be free to hire whomever they want or not. That can get sticky in todays world because we scream out loudly if a woman is passed over for a job she could do in favor of a man. We also scream loudly if a white person is hired over someone of another race. So it is no wonder that now here we are at this place. What was next after gender and race? Why religion of course! We have created this situation ourselves.

Sarah Desrosiers' story:

How I nearly lost my business after refusing to hire a Muslim hair stylist who wouldn't show her hair

Sarah felt that a job requirement of any hairdresser was that the stylist's hair would provide clients with a showcase of different looks. Especially one working in a salon such as hers, which specialises in alternative cuts and colours.
Yet the ten minutes during which Sarah's world collided with Bushra's has resulted in an extraordinary employment battle, in which* she was accused of 'direct' and 'indirect' discrimination.
For a year, Sarah has been facing financial ruin, due to a compensation claim for £34,000 brought by Bushra, 19, who has maintained she is due that figure after being turned down for a job at the Wedge salon in London's King's Cross.
In the event, the tribunal ruled this week that while Bushra's claim of direct discrimination failed, her claim for indirect discrimination had succeeded.
Sarah has therefore been ordered to pay £4,000 compensation by way of 'injury to feelings'.
Although this is a smaller sum than she'd feared she might have to hand over, Sarah, 32, is still outraged.
'I am a small business and the bottom line is that this is not a woman who worked for me,' says Sarah.

It all makes me angry on Sarah's behalf.

FTA:

In the course of preparing for her trial, Sarah estimates she has lost £40,000 of her salon's annual income.

She also faced a further blow when it emerged that Bushra had increased the figure to £34,000 to compensate for hate mail she had received following Press coverage of the trial.
