As the search for the missing 42-year-old Manassas man, whose abandoned car was found at Shenandoah National Park, moves into its fifth day, teams are now returning to areas already searched to conduct more detailed examinations, authorities said Tuesday.

A business card belonging to Jose Martins Jr. was discovered near his vehicle that was found by a park ranger Saturday morning.

A check of the vehicle’s plates turned up information that Martins had been reported missing and triggered the search that has involved more than 50 park employees and volunteers, said Karen Beth-Herzog, a spokeswoman for the park.

Cigarette butts were also found, Beth-Herzog said, and have been sent to a lab to make sure they belonged to Martins.

Search operations began Saturday with more than 50 people combing through parkland for Martins, who was reported missing Thursday — a day after family members say Martins left home, authorities said.
Martins was described as being despondent.

As of now, there is nothing to indicate foul play, Beck-Herzog said.

Crews began with high probability areas like roads, drains, trails and adjacent areas, Beth-Herzog said. They are now returning to those areas to do a more thorough search and are beginning to move into the lower probability areas.

Operations have centered on the Keyser Run area in the park’s northern district.

Anyone with information about Jose Alfonso Martins Jr. is asked to call 800-732-0911.
