VA - Basil Abdul 'Faruq, 8, murdered; brother Jamal, 7, missing - Richmond, 1990
April 1990: 8-year-old Basil Faraq was last seen playing with his brother, Jamal, in their family's Richmond, Virginia neighborhood on April 16, 1990. Their stepmother dropped them off at the apartment of their mother, Tambra Ellis, and they went outside to play in the front yard at 2:30 p.m. while Ellis slept inside. When she woke up, she went looking for her sons but could not find them. The boys never returned to their apartment in the 1700 block of Clarkson Road.
Authorities discovered Basil's body in a Chesterfield County landfill located approximately five miles from their home. Basil had been stabbed to death; his remains were bound with duct tape and placed in a dumpster. There was no sign of Jamal at the scene and he has never been heard from again.
Investigators detained the boys' father, Everette Abdul'Faruq, for three hours after Basil's body was recovered. Court documents indicated that authorities initially believed the child was injured or killed inside his father's residence. A search of the property failed to produce any evidence to support the theory. Everette has never been implicated in connection with his sons' cases. Jamal's case remains unsolved.

After boy's slaying, brother missing for 19 yearsBy Alexis Weed, Nancy Grace producer

"Jamal was the one who asked could they go out," Ellis said. "I said, 'of course.' "
It was the last time she would see her children. She said she took a short nap, about 30 minutes. Then she walked outside to call the boys in for dinner.
As with most missing child cases, investigators turned their attention to the boys' parents. They seized duct tape and other evidence from Abdul'Faruq's home. But both parents were eventually cleared. "They've been very cooperative from the very beginning," Capocelli said.

On the third day of the search, the boys’ father, Everett Abdul’Faruq, was told that Basil’s body had been found about 10 miles from the Ellis home in a Chesterfield landfill. It seemed a truck driver had seen his body jutting out of a torn plastic garbage bag. Though his skull was fractured, the medical examiner’s office reported that Basil was stabbed to death.

Maybe Basil fought back more than they expected and received some of his injuries then? So, they killed him in order to scare Jamal into cooperating? (By 'they' I mean whomever did this.)
