Wilma Rae Vermaas
Missing since April 3, 1976 from West Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.
Classification: Missing

Date Of Birth: May 24, 1952
Age at Time of Disappearance: 23 years old
Height and Weight at Time of Disappearance: 5'4"; 110 lbs.
Distinguishing Characteristics: White female. Brown hair; brown eyes.
Marks, Scars: Scar on left knee, discoloration on abdomen

It certainly looks close. Same hair, eyes, weight, location, date, age. And even a scar near the knee - although one says left and the other right.

I noticed that but I wondered if being under stress whoever gave the information could have gotten it confused. If they pictured it in their mind and was facing her it would be on their left but on her right leg. just odd that everything goes but wrong leg.

Is there any way of getting a rule out list on this young lady? Wilma Rae Vermaas was my first guess too but given the long period of time with no response from LE I'm guessing that she's been ruled out.

I'm guessing email to the Namus case manager and maybe they can provide anyone already ruled out.

I was just taking a close look at this possible match between Wilma Rae Vermaas and LASD Jane Doe #25, and saw something that did not get any mention on this thread.

The Charley Project write-up on WRV indicates:

both her upper front teeth are false, and one of her lower front teeth is a baby tooth and smaller than the others.

The DoeNet profile on JD25 includes a link to the UID's dental chart. I saw this when we were looking at the Purple Bells girl in the Alcala thread, but I didn't think of looking at it with respect to WRV.

http://doenetwork.org/cases/images/587UFCAdentals.jpg

With respect to the upper front teeth, it appears to match. For JD25's two upper front teeth (#8 and 9), it indicates "Plastic Crowns - No Metal Coping" (Coping is the inside core of a dental crown).

However, with respect to the lower teeth, there is no indication of a baby tooth, or that one is smaller than the others. It only indicates a 2MM gap between her lower central incisors (#24 and 25), and describes her four lower front teeth as "Normal".

Could there be an error in either Charley Project's description of WRV's lower teeth, or maybe the coroner overlooked something in the dental charts? --- Maybe --- But if not, this would appear to be a rule-out, despite the tantalizing matching details about the crowns on #8 and #9.

NamUs just added a photo to Linda Miller's previously No Photo casefile:

She reportedly went to Guadalajara, Mexico with a friend and never returned. So assuming that's true, this would not be a match. The three-year lag is also somewhat of a problem.

However, if we presume that she didn't really go to Mexico, this might be a decent possible.

She is wearing a long-sleeved print blouse worn midriff style, just as did the jane doe. This is obviously not the same blouse, but Jane Doe did have similar fashion sense.

And she has a very similar heart shaped facial structure, and straight hair well past the shoulders. Her age would be about right, and her height is within an inch.

I just got off the phone with the detective in charge of Linda Miller's MP case. I had e-mailed him last night, asking him (1) whether her male friend CWK is still unaccounted for and listed in NCIC as a Missing Person, (2) whether there was a reasonable certainty that Linda and CWK actually did go to Guadalajara and didn't return, and (3) whether Linda had ever been compared to the Lopez Canyon Jane Doe.

We had a very pleasant conversation, and the detective provided a lot of additional information that isn't indicated in Linda's NamUs casefile. He says that they tracked Linda's and CWK's movements to Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta from their traveler's cheques, some of which were used and some which were not. They had been staying at a hotel which had burned down at that time that they were staying there. But Linda's family did not report her missing untill 2001. By then, San Rafael PD attempted to but was unable to obtain any information from the Mexican authorities regarding any unidentified remains that might have been found in the ashes of the hotel.

He also said that Linda and CWK were very politically active, and were advocates for the plight of the farmers in Mexico. At the time, there was an active protest movement on behalf of the farmers and against the Mexican government. There is some speculation (though nothing more) that their disappearances were related to their political activities.

As for CWK, his family reported him missing back then, but he was never entered into NCIC. At the time, MP cases were the responsibility of the jurisdiction where the MP last resided, and CWK lived in a different jurisdiction than Linda did. CWK's parents are now deceased, but he has siblings who are still alive, and he expects that they will file a MP report soon, and he will probably create a NamUs MP casefile for CWK.

Regarding Lopez Canyon Jane Doe, he says that he will look into it despite the high probability that Linda and CWK never returned from Mexico.

He is currently in the process of getting all of his 20 outstanding MP cases into NamUs. He was very complimentary of the NamUs system, says that it is far superior to NCIC.

Is it just me that saw a definite similarity between the sketch and a picture of Edna Christine Thorne? Wide forehead, slim nose, somewhat long and pointy chin, eyebrow shape not far off(and it says that the UID had plucked eyebrows), and they both have a quite small mouth(or at least I think Edna’s mouth would appear to be quite small when she’s not smiling).
She went missing a year earlier from Pennsylvania, fits the lower age range, was probably abducted, so that could explain why she’s in a completely different part of the US than where she went missing, fits the weight range(why no mention of the UID’s height?), and it says that she has brown hair in the description.

I also thought Sherry Jean Pickle was worth considering.
She doesn't strike me as perfectly similar, but she has the same wide forehead and long but heart shaped face as the UID. Her eye area looks even more similar to the sketch than Edna's, even if her eyes are described as hazel instead of brown. She fits the weight range, too.

She went missing in Long Beach, California, in 1972 aged 15, which would make her 19,5 years in April 1976. Exactly in the middle of the age range. She was believed to have hitchhiked to Los Angeles.

The fractured ankle and scar makes me think that it's not a complete possibility, though.
