SC - Camp counselor teaches soldiers' kids the 'choking game'

    http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,351772,00.html
Authorities say the counselor put his hands around a boy's neck and choked him unconscious twice. A second boy also told authorities Riley choked him until he passed out. (more at link)

(I'm not sure how old the kids were, but I'd be surprised if they didn't know about this "game" already, unless they were really young.)

    From link:
Coker said that after the camp ended, one of the children tried the game on a sibling. The mother apparently found out and asked where the boy had learned the game. The boy told his mother, who then contacted the sheriff’s office.

This is bad enough when it just involves the kids. but to have an adult legitimize it by teaching it to these children is just downright scary.

The kids were 9-12 apparently. I think that's about when my kids started hearing about it at school (9,10 at the time), but I had already told them about it! Whew. It wasn't a fun conversation, and then one time my then 10 yr old got mad at me for something and said "FINE then I'll just go try the choking game because YOU don't love me!" Grrrr....

I think there should be two or more adults (not 17?) in the same room with kids at camp. I would think that would help alleviate some of this type of activity. Then again, peer pressure is so strong at that age....

What was going through that camp counselor's mind to teach young children such a dangerous thing? Is he sadistic, wanting to see if they try it and kill each other? I've never heard of such a thing in my day..

My guess is not that the counselor was sadistic, Meow. He's probably not very mature. Well, that goes without saying. Maybe he thought he'd look cool if he taught the kids the game? Can you even imagine having a parent over in Iraq and your kid is home on US soil and dies because some teen taught them this? That'd be a phonecall ya'd never want to get. I'm in my late 40's and I knew all about it. We did this as kids. They had this on some talk show and my child and mom and I were watching, and I said "Oh we used to do that all the time". My mom looks horrified and says "Are you outta your mind? When and where was this?" then my daughter says "Man, I knew you weren't too bright, mom, but that's plain stupid". It is, but I don't need to hear it so condescnding and my response to my mom was "Yes, yes I was outta my mind".

Hey, Filly, I did this once or twice myself in the private school girls bathroom. I can't believe I was so stupid, but I think I was trying to fit in. New school and all.

I think he must be immature too.

Has to be the all girls school. LOL Me too. If you told me to jump off the bridge after ya I would have. Meanwhile if you don't love me FINE I'm gonna just well go do something. I'm sorry that is not funny, and I felt your pain there. Kids threatening us. Talk about ulcers, and nervous breakdowns. LOL Your a good mom, TM. I used to love the emphatic "FINE".

That's exactly why I never, ever, let my kids go to camp. It was enough worrying about pedophiles. Now parents have to worry about this type of crapola.

Filly, there were 10 kids in our 8th grade class. 8 girls, 2 boys. We were, sadly, all trying to be cool.

I won't let mine go off to camp. I know, I'm a helicopter parent, oh well.

When my dd was growing up, the 2 young girls next door had parties where they did this on the front lawn. (Parents were LOSERS.) So, it can happen anywhere, unfortunately.

Oh man, I had nightmares about them going to camp.
The only camp my oldest went to was Girl Scout day camp and I was her troop leader and with her every day.

You know what makes me really sad is that these are kids of soldiers that either are deployed or are going to be deployed. They really don't need these kinds of thoughts going on in their heads. It's so difficult when your father is gone for so long. I just hope they realize how dangerous it could be if they keep trying it when nobody is around.

Yes it can happen anywhere, TM like on the front lawn. Unbelievable. Wow, you were in a real private school. Ten kids in the entire 8th grade? That was what we had in like one row. You're right about these children and their parents serving or getting ready to go over to Iraq. They may be more vulnerable no doubt and they got this nutter teaching them this. My DD went to theater camps, but older. I was fortunate she's one of them big mouths would tell ya everything that everyone did. She'd even dime herself out. LOL I have to say I was Blessed she loved talking about the bad stuff all the kids did including herself. That sure changed at 17.

I learned about it at public school in the girls bath with girl my own age. I think we were in 7th grade. I never did it but I watch other girls do it. I was always afraid I would not wake back up.
