Ruth Stoeffler won't be the oldest person ever to receive a bachelor's degree from Western Michigan University.
But the 83-year-old Kalamazoo woman will be among the most senior of seniors taking part in the school's graduation ceremony with 2,600 other students on Saturday. Stoeffler took 13 years to complete her undergraduate degree in social science studies, earning grades good enough for her to graduate magna *advertiser censored* laude.
The tiny, energetic retired nurse tells the Kalamazoo Gazette she did it to fill her days following the death of her husband.
It will be her first college degree. She basically learned about nursing while on the job for 43 years.
Her four children have nine degrees among them.
